NYC Councilman Yusef Salaam got Mayor Adams' first donation -- then endorsed Adrienne Adams (D)

In January, Harlem Councilman Yusef Salaam became the first New York City politician to receive a campaign contribution from Mayor Eric Adams, filings show.

But weeks later, Salaam, a member of the “Exonerated 5,” threw his political weight behind Council Speaker Adrienne Adams’ bid to become the city’s next mayor.

Salaam’s March 8 endorsement of Speaker Adams’ mayoral bid came after his reelection campaign accepted $100 in cash from Eric Adams on Jan. 3 — the first political contribution he has made on the city level since his Jan. 1, 2022 inauguration, previously unreported records show. It’s unclear if Adams made the contribution as part of any fundraiser, but $100 is the legal max a person can give a local political candidate in cash.

Salaam, who’s being challenged in June’s primary by educator Elizabeth Sanchez, didn’t return a request for comment Monday, and neither did a spokesman for the mayor. Speaker Adams’ campaign declined comment.
