NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D) readies potential mayoral run, declaring she'll stand up to Trump
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams has taken a first official step toward a potential run for mayor, filing paperwork to open a campaign account that allows her to start fundraising while taking a shot at the incumbent over the hot button issue of Donald Trump.
The speaker — who would face a bevy of logistical challenges in running against Mayor Adams in June’s Democratic primary — said Thursday she has yet to make a final decision on whether to jump into the crowded race. According to sources, she plans to make a conclusive decision after delivering her State of the City address this Tuesday.
“I didn’t seek this. It wasn’t in my plans,” the speaker said at an afternoon press conference. “But as more serious stakeholders in our city have indeed urged me to consider serving the city in this capacity, I’ve given it much more serious consideration. We have an urgency in this moment.”
Speaking at City Hall, the speaker emphasized her years of experience in city government, willingness to stand up to President Trump and frequent position as a foil to the mayor, whose legal and political troubles have plunged his administration into disarray.
