Cascade County decides against pre-printed labels for write-in ballots

CASCADE COUNTY, Mont. – Cascade County Commissioners have decided to prohibit pre-printed labels on ballots for the upcoming election. The decision comes amid concerns that some write-in candidates want to distribute stickers with their names correctly spelled.

In Montana, a new law requires write-in candidates to file with the Secretary of State's Office and mandates that voters spell their names correctly on ballots for the vote to count. This led to the idea of using stickers or pre-printed labels.

Terry Thompson, the Elections Administrator for Cascade County, consulted with ES&S, the tabulation machine's manufacturer, which warned that stickers could interfere with ballot counting.

"It's not a matter of if, but it's a matter of when the stickers are going to cause problems for gumming in different things with the tabulator," said Thompson.
