Mabel-Canton school board asks voters to approve referendum in special election

CANTON, Minn. (KTTC) – Voting is underway in Fillmore County to determine the future of a bond referendum brought forward by the Mabel-Canton School Board.

The referendum is asking for nearly $9 million in additional taxpayer support for building improvements that is spread out over more than 20 years.

According to superintendent Gary Kuphal, if approved, the referendum would allow for several facility upgrades, including replacing the more than 50-year-old locker room, repairing roof sections, renovating classrooms, and adding air conditions.

The largest project in the proposal would be a new career and technical education center to help students prepare for high-demand jobs in the trades.
