West Michigan school districts with operating cash requests on May 5 election ballot
GRAND RAPIDS, MI West Michigan school leaders are reminding voters to head to the polls next Tuesday, May 5 to consider ballot proposals to continue their operating millage to support day-to-day operations.
Most residents will not be impacted by the measures because the tax is not on primary residences, only non-homestead properties that include industrial, commercial, and rental properties as well as second homes.
Non-homestead property taxes provide a huge portion of the operating revenue for most school districts. Eight districts in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties are seeking voter support for operating millages next week.
A yes vote allows districts to continue collecting up to 18 mills in property taxes on non-homestead properties, which is required to receive their full state funding per student.
