Kalamazoo County Democrats evacuate office after finding 'suspicious package'
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo County Democratic Party office was evacuated Saturday morning after a suspicious package was found, the organization says. A preliminary investigation of the package revealed it contained no hazardous materials.
The office announced the evacuation in a social media post just before noon, writing that everyone who was inside the office at the time is safe.
Sixteen people, including more than a dozen volunteers, were inside the building for a volunteer training event when the package was found around 9:30 a.m., local chair Justin Mendoza told News 8. Law enforcement advised the group to shelter in place before evacuating them around 11 a.m.
An initial examination of the package revealed that it didn’t contain any hazardous materials, only notes, but the investigation is ongoing, Mendoza said.
