Detroit mayoral candidates spar in debate over crime, affordable housing

Four Detroit mayoral candidates made their case to become the city's next top leader during a live, televised debate on WDIV-Local 4 on Monday, pledging to build on the momentum of the last decade but also highlighting why they are uniquely qualified.

The debate, in front of an audience at Wayne State University's Valade Jazz Center, included a narrower field of candidates than previous forums, and some tackled the inexperience of specific opponents or what sets them apart from the rest of the field.

The Rev. Solomon Kinloch's lack of political experience was a recurring theme throughout the hour-long debate with the most direct jab coming during the opening statements when former Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the mayor's job "is not the time for on-the-job training."

"We have this one chance. We must get it right," Craig said.
