Gainesville city commissioners unanimously move forward with plans for GRU special election

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A unanimous vote by Gainesville city commissioners is moving the process along to hold a special election to return home rule of GRU back to the city.

This was just the first reading, and the second reading will be next Thursday, June 12. After Thursday’s lengthy discussion, commissioners seem determined to hold this special election.

Back in April, a judge ruled the city does have the authority to amend its charter. The judge determined the language on the ballot last November was unclear and misleading for voters.

Commissioners worked closely with their attorney to make sure they wouldn’t have any issues this time. During the meeting, all residents who spoke said they’re in favor of the city moving forward with returning home rule of GRU back to the city.
