MSNBC's New Show 'The Weekend' Averages 43% More Total Viewers Than December Ratings/Exclusive (The Wrap)

MSNBC’s “The Weekend” — launched on Jan. 13, just two days ahead of the Iowa Caucuses — is already seeing ratings success for the network, averaging 43% more total viewers than MSNBC’s December numbers.

In the adults 25-54 demographic since its launch, “The Weekend” averaged 78% more viewers than the network’s December ratings in the time slot, according to Nielsen figures.

In February specifically, the new program saw month-over-month viewership growth by 8% in total viewership and 16% in the 25-54 age range. Additionally, the new show beat CNN on Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. ET in both hourly demos for the first time in 10 years.

“The Weekend” also beat CNN in total viewers for the month on Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. ET, for the second straight month. It should, however, be noted that Fox News’ Sunday program continues to double MSNBC’s “The Weekend” in total viewers and in the 25-54 demographic.

I haven't been all that impressed with this show, so this is kind of a surprise. Steele and Menendez are the best things about this show, though.

Yeah, but if you do that, you'd get a bunch of third-class amateurs, not the top level staff. ificandream Feb 2024 #2

with the whole stable of hosts and expert commentators, that would be of interest to me. Heck, I'd have an internal lottery to select the group. Keep it a secret until they air.

I think it's better the way it is, for what it's worth, although I would have loved to see Mehdi Hasan on that show.

I'd circulate a request for a couple of weekend panels, one on Saturday, one on Sunday. Maybe 11:00-1:00? Create a list of hosts, guest hosts, former hosts, and current contributors, then randomly select. Maybe poll the audience as to what questions to discuss. You know, get the MSNBC consumer engaged in the conversation.

I don't find chemistry, although they seem to respect each other. Some strong personalities among them too--make it hard to mesh.
