Hallmark adds fall mysteries, more musical Christmas movies

Across the Hallmark networks 40 original Christmas films will premiere in 2019 with new movies debuting Thursday and Friday nights on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries,
and Saturday and Sunday nights on Hallmark Channel throughout the holiday season. This year’s batch of Christmas films will be more musical.

“One of our biggest investments this year has been music,” said Michelle Vicary, executive vice president of Hallmark programming during a Hallmark party at the Television Critics Association summer 2019 press tour. “We use it to further distinguish the quality of our shows.”

In the coming months Hallmark Movies & Mysteries brings back favorites “Aurora Teagarden Mysteries” (9 p.m. Aug. 4, 11, 18), “Chronicle Mysteries” (9 p.m. Aug. 25), “Darrow & Darrow” (9 p.m. Sept. 1), “Mystery 101” (9 p.m. Sept. 8, 15), “Ruby Herring Mysteries” (9 p.m. Sept. 22) and “Crossword Mysteries” (9 p.m. Oct. 6, 12, 20).

Those titles are joined by the new “Matchmaker Mysteries” (9 p.m. Sept. 29) starring Danica McKellar (“The Wonder Years”) as Angie Dove, host of a Philadelphia-based reality show dedicated to helping singles find their soulmates. After one couple gets engaged on her show, the bride-to-be is murdered, leading Angie to investigate to the frustration of by-the-book detective Kyle Cooper (Victor Webster, “Younger”).

As for the long-gestating next “Jesse Stone” movie, Ms. Vicary said it’s in the hands of “Jesse Stone” star/writer Tom Selleck.

“He’s been working on some ideas,” she said. “When he’s ready, we’re ready. … He says, ‘I don’t look for the crime or the situation, I just look for where Jesse Stone is in his life and what falls into his lap.’ That’s how he writes it.”

They follow a particular formula, and tend to have an almost British flavor to them-- kind like the stuff you see on PBS.

And they are followed by reruns of Murder She Wrote, keeping up the flow of genteel slaughter.

She's a hardcore Hallmark addict and this will give a lot of quality time while I'm in the other room watching every football game on tv. Of course, she's the addict, not me.

I especially love the mysteries. Nothing gory, nothing fancy, just follow the bouncing ball to a satisfying conclusion. Comfortable solutions and everyone lives in perfectly perfect homes. What’s not to love. 😍

I think there may have been one that featured black lead actors/actresses; but their movies, year after year, are exceptionally monochromatic given the sheer volume they produce. They are even worse when looking for lead characters who are LGBT. I can't believe more people on the left aren't speaking out about the horrendous casting and storytelling in these movies.

will be a loooong time before Hallmark adds any gay characters. I love mysteries. Don’t much care who is in them.
