I was moving from Hollywood to Palm Springs and got stuck for a few extra days while The Rodney King riots ripped through the city. (Every business in my neighborhood was looted and burned (save the 7-11-the owners were up on the roof with rifles. I decided to just go-and went-and as I got on to I-5 the police started shutting it down! They were just blocking the very last (the fast lane) as I got to them, so I went around on the shoulder and kept going!!

I got to Baldwin Heights and my GAS LIGHT GOES OFF! So I pull off and the gas station is still open even though there are fires all around, and while I pumped gas I watched more flare up. I ran in and paid, jumped in my car, took off and there was this HORRIBLE crunch like my drive train fell out or something. I stop and get out and realized I drove off with the nozzle still in the tank. The owner is running up the street so I pull it out, throw it on the sidewalk and yell, "You have my credit card number!! Bill me!!"

And I took off and went around more cops who were closing on ramps and somehow got out of the city to Palm Springs where I was a nervous wreck for the next couple of days.

This picture, with the layers of smoke/smog/fog/whatever, reminds me of the layered sky during the riots, except it got much much darker in places.

Wonderful photo.

I live in Culver City, and I had to get to work at my TV station in the East Hollywood/Silverlake area. I had KFWB "all new" station on and I had to monitor the rioting so I could get around it. I didn't feel good about leaving my wife and two daughters at home, but the Culver City police had completely closed the city to outsiders.
