Maxwell's Silver Hammer - The Beatles

Always sing this in my head when I'm pounding chicken cutlets with my little silver mallet that I named maxwells silver hammer. So I'm making cutlets today.

I've never understood why anyone would write, much less record, a song like this. eppur_se_muova Apr 7 #1

The Wikipedia entry is ... interesting. Apparently McCartney was the only Beatle who thought the song was worth multiple takes, and critics, then and since, have pretty well trashed it.

It was only partially redeemed for me when someone here posted a song with the lyrics, "Bang bang Maxwell's in the slammer" when Ghislaine Maxwell was sent to prison. Now that was funny!

And at least "Run for Your Life'--another reprehensible Beatles song--had some nice guitar riffs. Then too, John Lennon, who write the song, often mentioned how much he hated it, and only wrote it under deadline pressure to finish an album. McCartney by contrast still defends this crap.

My theory: McCartney was trying to write his own "Mack the Knife."

But: ugh!
