(1,372 posts)I can down load books from the library and read them at my convenience. The iPad allows me to change font, the orientation from portrait/landscape, the background color from white to black, increase/decrease the brightness, as well as to highlight a word or phrase and look it up using wifi. I've owned a kindle in the past an it can do almost the same as the iPad but I prefer the iPad over a Kindle.
Note: If you want to go the iPad way but don't want to pay full price for it, you can buy a "renewed" iPad on Amazon for about a quarter of what a new one would cost.

(1,372 posts)It takes me to my local library where I can search for books and borrow them for a month. I can also use their app on my iPad and cellphone to download and listen to audiobooks.
The app is free.

Gives you access to the entire range of media the library offers.
My library allows 50 downloads, each one is for 21 days.
Also offers TV, Movies, BingePasses to popular streaming channels and about a zillion other things.

(790 posts)I bought it so I could enlarge the print since having issues seeing the print in printed books. I had a regular Kindle before that which I didnt like so I didnt use it. Amazon gave me a little money for it when I bought the paperwhite. The paperwhite is lightweight and compact which is nice. The battery stays charged for a long time so you dont need to keep charging it.

(70,701 posts)Yeah, I know, Jeff Bezos. So do this:
Get one when they store on one of their many 50 percent off sales. Best Buy mat he's the Amazon price. The Memorial Day sale is probably on now.
The 8" one should be ~ $60, and the 10" one should be ~ $75. Unless a new 10" one has just been released, the 8" one is a slightly newer design. The 10" one is due for an update.
Out of the box, the only point of an Amazon Fire is to let you know about all the wonderful things you van buy at Amazon. But you can fix that. Once you've got your device charged, immediately go here and follow the instructions:
Install the Google Play Store on your Amazon Fire Tablet
Once you've removed your Fire from the Amazon ecisystem, it takes on a whole new existence.
My 8" Fire is easily my most used device. I'm posting this from it now.
You won't be sorry.
And good afternoon.
