Sen. Andy Kim on Sunday pleaded with President Donald Trump and Republicans to refrain from sending American soldiers into Iran as the war continues. In an interview with CNNs State of the Union, the New Jersey Democrat made a direct call to Trump and his congressional allies: We cannot have American troops on the ground in Iran. This is going to be such a risky operation. And for what purpose?
No American troops have as of yet invaded Iran, but the Washington Post reported this week that the Pentagon is preparing for extended ground operations in Iran, and the Wall Street Journal reported as many as 10,000 additional troops could be deployed to the region.
The reports come as Trump has fluctuated between declaring the U.S.-Israel war with Iran essentially over and threatening to escalate the conflict to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on. Already nearly 5,000 Marines and roughly 2,000 members of the Armys 82nd Airborne Division have been deployed to the region.
This is not an end to this war, this is something that will only prolong it and increase the risk at a time that weve seen already so many service members put at harms way, and this administration not giving them everything that they need, Kim said. Kim, a former State Department officer who was embedded with the military in Afghanistan, pointed out that many losses American troops endured in Iraq and Afghanistan were the result of improvised explosive devices from Iranian-backed militia groups.
