Fine arts panel urges Mint to make Trump gold coin 'as large as possible'

Source: MS Now

Members of a federal arts commission voted on Thursday to create a 24-carat commemorative gold coin featuring President Donald Trump — and to make it “as large as possible.”

The Commission of Fine Arts, a seven-person panel appointed by the president, passed a motion calling for the U.S. Treasury to manufacture the coin. The gold piece would feature Trump leaning over the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office on one side and a bald eagle on the other.

Trump personally reviewed and approved the proposed designs for the coins, Megan Sullivan, acting chief of the Office of Design Management at the U.S. Mint, told the panel.

The committee’s vice chairman, James McCrery II, the initial architect for Trump’s White House ballroom project, called for the motion to pass “with the strong encouragement that you make it as large as possible, all the way to three inches in diameter” — the biggest size the Mint has available.

New @ms.now: Members of a federal arts commission voted today to create a 24-carat commemorative gold coin featuring Trump — and urged the U.S. Mint to make it “as large as possible.”

This is the same group that greenlit his WH ballroom plans AND a design for a coin emblazoned w/ Trump's face.

1866 Law: Passed following a scandal where a treasury official put his own face on currency, prohibiting living people from appearing on U.S. money. The law, which specifically bans living people on "bonds, securities, notes, and currency," is often applied to coins.

Coinage Law: 31 U.S. Code 5112 dictates that no coin issued may bear the image of a living former or current President.

Exceptions: While rarely, a few living individuals have appeared on specific U.S. commemorative coins (e.g., in the background or during special, non-circulating releases).

Proposed 2026 Coinage: While there were reports in 2025/2026 regarding a Donald Trump commemorative coin under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, these are often viewed as potential exceptions rather than a repeal of the general law, as discussed on Politifact and the Detroit Free Press.

By Tim Reid

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - A federal arts panel comprised of members appointed by Donald Trump on Thursday unanimously approved a commemorative gold coin featuring his image, the latest effort by the administration to celebrate the president.

Critics, including Democrats and members ‌of another federal arts committee, said minting a coin with a sitting president's image went against American values, especially as the nation ‌celebrates its 250th birthday this year and the end of British monarchical rule.

During a presentation by a U.S. Mint official to the Commission of Fine Arts, discussion turned to what diameter the 24-carat coin should be, up to a maximum of three inches.

Chamberlain Harris, 26, a White House aide who Trump appointed to the commission this year, said the biggest possible coin would be Trump's preference.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people

Surely it's just gold plated, probably silver, right? Cause, I think, that big a coin would have to be at least 3 or 4 oz, and in solid gold the stupid thing could easily run 20k or more.
Editing to add, a quick search makes me think it would be closer to 8oz, so more like 40k.

51. A ""fine arts" panel appointed by Trump

It certainly brings a new definition to the word “fine.”

The illustration shows no denomination, so it’s a medal, not an NCLT coin.

No weight was mentioned, but since Trump’s ego is involved, it’s not going to be wafer thin like an Austrian 4 Dukat coin. Figure at least four ounces, or $18,000 worth of gold at current levels. Production costs, marketing, and a profit for the mint have to be added on, or else the government is just selling gold for the same price it will cost them to replace the metal on the open market.

The USA introduced the successful American Eagle gold bullion coins (and they ARE NCLT) in 1986. Not only were there 1 ounce coins—there were also half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce coins to make them as widely accessible as possible to the world public, and it worked. For as little as $60 or so, a family or an individual could participate in the program without having to sell their car.

To free up the necessary pocket change for an ugly $20,000 medallion, even the staunchest Trumpanzee voters might balk at having to sell their first-born child into slavery to own one. Their failure on the world and domestic coin and bullion markets is pre-programmed. The few that do get sold will mostly end up at shops that trade in bullion, bought in from the public at 95% of the current market value (if you’re lucky!), and then melted down within a week at the latest.

Not the best use of government resources if you ask me. Even DOGE would probably nix this project before it got off the ground, if anyone were to ask them. But, of course, no one will ask them.
