NEW YORK (AP) — The monthlong celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride reaches its rainbow-laden crescendo as New York and other major cities around the world host major parades and marches on Sunday.

The festivities in Manhattan, home to the nation’s oldest and largest Pride celebration, kicked off with a march down Fifth Avenue featuring more than 700 participating groups and expected huge crowds.

Doriana Feliciano was among those in the crowd trying to keep cool in the sweltering heat. The self-described LGBTQ ally held up a sign saying “Please don’t lose hope” in support of friends she said couldn’t attend Sunday.

“We’re in a very progressive time, but there’s still hate out there, and I feel like this is a great way to raise awareness,” Feliciano said. “There are people like me who might not fit in this community but are definitely a part of it because I still support these people and it just basically stems from basic empathy.”
