PONTIAC, MI - A mass shooting has been prevented at a high school graduation in Metro Detroit, and two suspects have been arrested.
The Oakland County Sheriffs Office says it all started on the evening of Tuesday, June 3 during the graduation ceremony for The Arts and Technology Academy in Pontiac. The ceremony took place at the United Wholesale Mortgage sports complex.
According to a statement on Facebook from the charter school, some friends and relatives of those at the ceremony were looking to retaliate against some in attendance.
The statement adds that there was a brief physical altercation which took place inside the venue. Staff and security handled it, removed those involved and no one was hurt. The ceremony continued without issue.
However, according to Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, the situation was much more than that.
A person approached our deputies and gave them information that a family member had told them that they had seen on Snapchat a threat to shoot up this graduation ceremony, Sheriff Bouchard said in a news conference earlier today.
That information was relayed to our folks on scene and in partnership with the security, they determined those individuals involved had been seen putting packages under cars in the parking lot and ultimately left the scene. Those packages were still there.
