Outrage after Republican representative disparages Sikh prayer in the US House
Source: The Guardian
A Republican congresswoman is facing widespread backlash after saying that a Sikh should not have conducted a prayer in the US House.
Mary Miller, an Illinois representative, on Friday published then deleted a post on X saying that Giani Singh, a Sikh Granthi from southern New Jersey, should not have delivered the Houses morning prayer.
Miller at first mistakenly identified Singh as a Muslim and said that it was deeply troubling someone of that faith had been allowed to lead prayer in the House and it should never have been allowed, Miller posted on X.
America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further from it, Miller continued. May God have mercy.

ANY member of Congress should understand the basics of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

(19,482 posts)On January 5, 2021, two days into her House term, Miller issued a prepared speech to the conservative group Moms for America. She quoted Adolf Hitler, saying, "Each generation has the responsibility to teach and train the next generation. You know, if we win a few elections, we're still going to be losing unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing: he said, 'Whoever has the youth has the future.'"
Isn't she so sweet?

Rep Miller left a few sentences out of that quote
Whoever has the youth has the future. My teaching will be hard. Weakness will be knocked out of them. A violently active, dominating, brutal youth - that is what I am after."

(591 posts)The genius of the founding fathers is they understood that Christianity could not only stand on its own but would thrive without being written into the laws and founding documents of the country. In fact, it was likely their own faith that led them to this conclusion. Many of the founding fathersWashington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison and Monroepracticed a faith called Deism. Deism is a philosophical belief in human reason as a reliable means of solving social and political problems. Deists believe in a supreme being who created the universe to operate solely by natural lawsand after creation, is absent from the world. This belief in reason over dogma helped guide the founders toward a system of government that respected faiths like Christianity, while purposely isolating both from encroaching on one another so as not to dilute the overall purpose and objectives of either.

(263 posts)The United States of America was not founded as a Christian nation. Even a precursory reading of our early history establishes that fact. If we keep electing uninformed and history-ignorant people to positions in our government we will never make any progress.

These Republicans simply do not understand at all how our government operates.

(1,481 posts)It's mostly found in Punjab, in the northwest part of India near the border of Pakistan. While it is monotheistic, it's not the same as the one in the Abrahamic religions. However, it rejects that one religious tradition has a monopoly on absolute truth and they don't proselytize. In other words, exactly the opposite of what the Christian nationalists do. The fact that Sikhism doesn't do that is abhorrent to them, especially with the former point that rejects that one religious tradition has a a monopoly on absolute truth. Now that is not to say there are extremist/terrorist Sikh groups, there are. However, compared to Abrahamic religions, you don't hear them as often. Like jihadists, these Christian nationalists believe their way is the one way and will do anything, even violence, to keep it that.

Illinois Republican mistakes Sikh for Muslim, calls him delivering prayer in House deeply troubling

..........Miller later edited her post on X to replace Muslim with Sikh before deleting the post altogether. Her office did not respond to a request for comment about the incident.
The House has long welcomed guest chaplains from many types of faiths including Muslims, with a Muslim guest chaplain notably reading from the Quran in November 2001 following the 9/11 terror attacks.

(2,178 posts)Where do they get this horseshit from? Is it because it was the most popular faith in the colonies and the newly formed U.S.? That doesnt mean shit in our founding documents. In fact, a case can be made that "endowed by their Creator", ( the capital c was added in the final draft by a "politician". ) simply means a person's parents. Because you are a human being, you have certain rights that cannot be denied by any government or any other human being.
Simply put: I am not hurting anyone else or infringing on their basic human rights so fuck off and worry about your own shit.
I guess when you say you are a Christian but you don't follow and live by the teachings of Jesus Christ, anything is possible.

We dont say it in schools, (anymore; thank you Baal) I never said it when I was in the Army, I never had prayer sessionsat ANY company at which I was ever employed.
