Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says Trump told her he would not pardon men convicted in kidnapping plot

Source: AP

Updated 5:34 PM EDT, May 30, 2025

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says President Donald Trump would be going back on his word to her if he pardoned two men who are serving prison sentences for leading a 2020 plot to kidnap her.

Whitmer, a Democrat, told Michigan Public Radio on Thursday that Trump asked her about a month ago how she would feel if he pardoned the two men. “I said, ‘I think it would be the wrong decision,’” Whitmer recounted. “I would oppose it and he said, ‘OK, I’ll drop it.’”

Whitmer, a possible 2028 presidential candidate, recounted the conversation one day after Trump said he was considering a pardon for the men, saying, “I will take a look at it. It’s been brought to my attention.” The Republican president said he followed the men’s trial and “it looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job.” He said the men “were drinking and I think they said stupid things.”

The U.S. Justice Department’s new pardon attorney also said this month he would take a “hard look” at pardoning Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox.

He is a felon. He will pardon those who did what he did. He will pardon the scam artists, those who cheated on their taxes, those who did what he wanted them to do like the Jan 6 thugs. He is demonstrating that those criminals are above the law like he is. He will pardon those who do his bidding. He is King and he will not stop.

time-wasting blabber, or some kind of leveraged threat, or a lie, or whether he actually would do something so immoral and unethical.

He is completely out of his mind, totally demented and it is well past time that the American people ramp up to the kind of public pressure it is going to take to get Congress to do something to impreach and remove him from office, or get him out on mental disaibilty.

Oh Gretchen. I'm afraid it looks like he completely played you. You sucked up to him for absolutely nothing except to make yourself look foolish. I hope you've learned a lesson from this. You must know he doesn't repeatedly tell that story of the snake for nothing.

Sat May 31, 2025, 07:59 PM
May 2025

I'm seeing a lot of comments that seem to be based on that assumption, but I don't think the article actually says that. We're told that she said he would be "going back on his word to her" if he pardons those thugs, but that sounds like a simple statement of fact to me. I don't see any indication in the article of whether she actually believed he would keep his promise to her, and it doesn't describe her as being shocked or even surprised by what he's been saying about it more recently.

If she DID take him at his word, then yes, she made a very big mistake, but the article doesn't say anything about that. I am therefore going to reserve judgement until I know more.
