Trump officials Bessent and Greer to meet with Chinese counterparts on trade, economic issues

Source: CNBC

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer will meet with their Chinese counterparts in Switzerland this week to discuss economic and trade matters, their offices announced Tuesday.

The meetings appear to be a major step toward Washington and Beijing beginning negotiations to potentially resolve an ongoing trade war ignited by President Donald Trump. Trump last month ratcheted up tariffs on Chinese imports to 145% even as he scaled back so-called reciprocal tariffs on almost all other U.S. trading partners. China retaliated with steep tariffs on U.S. goods.

Stock futures, which opened in the red Tuesday evening, turned sharply higher immediately following news of the meetings. Both Bessent and Greer plan to meet with Swiss President Karin Ketter-Sutter during their visit, their offices said.

“While in Switzerland, Secretary Bessent will also meet with the lead representative on economic matters from the People’s Republic of China,” the Treasury Department said. The Chinese Foreign Ministry later Tuesday said that Vice Premier He Lifeng, Beijing’s top official for China-U.S. economic and trade matters, will meet with Bessent in Switzerland, NBC News reported.

President Donald Trump's Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, and top trade official Jamieson Greer will meet with their Chinese counterparts in Switzerland this week, their offices said Tuesday.

The announcements signal a major step toward Washington and Beijing beginning negotiations amid an ongoing trade war. Both Bessent and Greer are set to meet with Swiss President Karin Ketter-Sutter during their visit, their offices said in separate press releases.

"While in Switzerland, Secretary Bessent will also meet with the lead representative on economic matters from the People's Republic of China," the statement from the U.S. Treasury Department said.

Greer "will also meet with his counterpart from the People's Republic of China to discuss trade matters" while in Geneva, his office said.

Taiwan to Xi Jinping and China in exchange for some more Chinese copyrights, a Turd hotel in Beijing and a few "love" letters from Xi.

Japan/EU: "Here is our offer."
US: "That's not good enough. Give me something else."
Japan/EU: "Well, what do you want?"
US: "We want a fair trade-deal."
Japan/EU: "Yes, but how? What specifics do you actually want from us?"
US: "I have no idea what Trump wants from this deal and I'm too afraid to fill in the blanks myself because if I guess wrong then he will destroy my career."
