Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz prison

Source: AP

President Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the notorious former prison on a California island.

In a message on his Truth Social site Sunday evening, Trump wrote that, “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

“That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” he wrote, adding: “The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.”

News flash: That's why it was closed.
The materials it was built with...steel, concrete, iron, roofing materials etc...don't do well in the constantly wet, salty, marine climate of it's island location. And it's been closed all this time with little maintenance.

It'li cost billions to restore to habitable levets Forget about DOGE and cutting expenses I guess.

Due to salt exposure.

The existing prison is obsolete and rebuilding would be incredibly expensive because it all has to be shipped out to the island on a boat. There also isn’t a lot of room to expand unless you build vertically.

And, oh yeah, the building has to be constructed to withstand earthquakes.

I took my mom on a tour when we visited her sister who lives in California. She just wanted to see the famed prison since we were so close. It was crumbling then--about 15 or so years ago.

https://apnews.com/article/trump-alcatraz-prison-fabe3385415ae03829d44e50efb3c1fb
...........Alcatraz Island is now a major tourist site that is operate by the National Parks Service and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

The closure of the federal prison in 1963 was attributed to crumbling infrastructure and the high costs of repairing and supplying the island facility, because everything from fuel to food had to be brought by boat.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement that the agency “will comply with all Presidential Orders.” The spokesperson did not immediately answer questions from The Associated Press regarding the practicality and feasibility of reopening Alcatraz or the agency’s role in the future of the former prison given the National Park Service’s control of the island.

The island serves as a veritable time machine to a bygone era of corrections. The Bureau of Prisons currently has 16 penitentiaries performing the same high-security functions as Alcatraz, including its maximum security facility in Florence, Colorado, and the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, which is home to the federal death chamber.

The order comes as Trump has been clashing with the courts as he tries to send accused gang members to a notorious prison in El Salvador, without due process. Trump has also directed the opening of a detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba,to hold up to 30,000 of what he has labeled the “worst criminal aliens.”.....................

Per the park ranger who led our group (and whose favorite phrase was "trust your ranger&quot a big chunk of the maintenance was paid for by Hollywood as the studios often used the site for prison scenes.

This could get interesting if the Bureau of Prisons has to fight the Park Service for it.

It will cost 10s of millions before a prisoner or guards can effectively use the place. Trump is killing off the tourist trade this place has.

A 1959 report indicated that the facility was over three times more expensive to run than the average American prison; $10 per prisoner per day compared to $3 in most other prisons. The problem was made worse by the buildings' structural deterioration from exposure to salt spray, which would require $5 million to fix. Major repairs began in 1958, but by 1961 engineers considered the prison a lost cause.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcatraz_Federal_Penitentiary

Just imagine how much more those facilities have decayed after 64 years.
