WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court on Thursday kept on hold President Donald Trumps restrictions on birthright citizenship but agreed to hear arguments on the issue in May. Trumps executive order to end birthright citizenship for the children of people who are in the U.S. illegally has been halted nationwide by three district courts around the country.
Appeals courts have declined to disturb those rulings. The Republican administration had sought to narrow those orders to allow for the policy to take effect in parts or most of the country while court challenges play out. That is expected to be the focus of the high court arguments.
Birthright citizenship automatically makes anyone born in the United States an American citizen, including children born to mothers in the country illegally.
The right was enshrined soon after the Civil War in the Constitutions 14th Amendment. Trump and his supporters have argued that there should be tougher standards for becoming an American citizen, which he called a priceless and profound gift in the executive order he signed soon after becoming president again in January.

This is now concerning that they would even entertain this and then wait until near the end of their session where they might do an overturn and destroy the country.

(11,536 posts)... that gives the president virtually unlimited power with no accountability. Whoda thunk the Founding Fathers were either complete idiots, or they really preferred having a king?

The reasoned among us will always resist.
Because...
The reasoned among us know that in reasons absence, delusion rules and our freedoms cease to exist.
My uncles and paternal grandfather fought in WWI & WWII.
They knew the value of fighting for freedom.
One of my uncles was a Brigadier General in the US Navy and a paratrooper in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
He married an Egyptian princess that immigrated to the US via Canada.
Her family still resides in Toronto Canada.
We are considering renewing their acquaintance to see what assistance they might be in such an endeavor.
I'll fight within arms reach of my ass until the day I die.
Here's to our individual and collective safety.
Here's to reason's rule!

So you go do what you want, me, I'll stay and fight for what's right, along with millions of our citizens who are fucking fed up with this criminal admin led by the biggest criminal to ever occupy the WH.

(55,464 posts)There is no reason to take this up. There is no disagreement among the circuit courts on this issue. This is a well established and well litigated right explicitly set forth in the Constitution.

(2,130 posts)... that this attack on birthright citizenship is the wrecking bar that will allow Trump to tear down the entire Constitution. Why do you think the Rabid Right is pushing so hard for a Constitutional convention?
These people and I use the term loosely are evil down to their DNA. They have always hated the very concept of democracy. And I thought it was axiomatic that Republicans NEVER negotiate with terrorists. Well, it is hard to negotiate with yourself when you're the terrorists.
Gloves off; knives out; no mercy.

about those people born on military bases in foreign countries while their parents were based outside of the US. I remember a well known talk show host that mentioned more than once she was born in another country when her father was based in another country. Dont remember the country.
