America's struggling wine industry is getting crushed by global tariffs and Canada's retaliation to them

Source: NBC News

April 17, 2025, 5:00 AM EDT

Canada’s break from American-made wine and the Trump administration’s global tariffs have compounded the struggles of the United States’ already-stressed wine industry to the point that it may be difficult for much of it “to come back from,” an American wine organization leader told NBC News. “Canada is the single most important export market for U.S. wines with retail sales in excess of $1.1 billion annually,” Robert Koch, the California Wine Institute’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

Last month Canada united to boycott American wines — taking all U.S.-made vino and alcohol off its liquor and wine store shelves and out of restaurants across the country — as an aggressive retaliatory response to Trump’s tariffs on its political ally north of the border. The boycott started in Ontario, and every other province responded in kind. When Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced his territory would ban American wine and alcohol, he mocked Trump’s signing an executive order in a social media video.

“This order, it’s a wonderful order, it’s a beautiful order,” Kinew said sarcastically. “This order is pulling American booze off the liquor market shelves.” His staff, lined up behind him, applauded as he held up the order for all to see. It has become a point of national pride not to buy American. “Their people are now motivated” because of the tariffs, Kaiser said. The results have the potential to be catastrophic for the wine world in the United States.

“We understand the reasoning behind some of these tariffs,” said Mike Kaiser, the executive vice president and director of government affairs for Wine America, a group that advocates for wine industry policies in Washington, D.C. His industry has been “caught in the crossfire” of a trade war, and even if the tariffs were reversed tomorrow, he said, “I think the psychological damage with the consumer might be really hard to come back from, even if these disputes are ironed out.”

You can thank those who voted to not have a "n**gress" elected to the Presidency and assumed that they would be immune to EVERYTHING ELSE that was "promised" by 45, which was ignored.

There is no reasoning behind any of these tariffs. Trump is too stupid to understand trade.

Tourism, the wine industry, bourbon and whiskey makers, biomedical and other research, public education, airplane manufacturing, auto industries, farmers. I’m sure there are more small businesses that rely on imports to make their products.

how about "COUNTLESS" U.S. INDUSTRIES AND SMALL BUSINESSES??????????/

Trump's tariff's are cascading all the way down to tons of small businesses, and the Domino Effect is increasing exponentially every hour of every day that passes.......

The new *United Corporations of America* are suddenly realizing that THEY too, along with all of the Trump Humping Voters, are being kicked to the curb........now that they are no longer useful to Trump/Putin's master plan........

Next are all the U.S. Republican Senators, the U.S. House Members, and the U.S. Supreme Court, none of which have any usefulness in a Tyranny.........Who here has ever heard of a single Dictatorship or Tyranny that needs a Legislative Branch or Judicial Branch of Government????

It’s about the military takeover in Chile on 9-11, 1973.

The “conservatives” who supported them were shocked when they were kicked to the curb by the military after the takeover. And they found out that no one was safe.

And U.S. wine industry, lotsa luck with trump, given that: 1.) Such a big portion of domestic wine production is located in California, a state that trump hates; and 2.) trump's a self-centered teetotaler, and therefore doesn't give a fuck about your industry.

Somehow this makes Americans "richer".

This is how all tariffs work, even "targeted" ones. They are advocated for as if they benefit everybody but they benefit nobody at worse and only politically connected industries at best.

I'm always shocked at the quality of a Bordeaux I can get for $12, whereas it's tough to find a California red that's not made in the east side of the Central Valley for that same price point.

My son’s college roommate freshman year father owns wineries in CA. Extremely expensive wine. I bought one of the cheapest bottles once. It was $60. https://farniente.com/

The son is very liberal, no idea about the rest of his family.

One of my son’s roommates was Warren Rudman’s grandson. I had no idea and when the guys came for a weekend, right after 2016 election, I was railing about how all Republicans are pure evil. My kid pulled me over after and told me who is grandfather was. I was like oops! Then a few weeks later Warren died and I felt really badly. The grandson is a D and did not vote for the moron.

They are all still good friend.

You can get great wines in the Sonoma Valley area...hubby and I have a couple of memberships at wineries there and one of them makes some of the best reds in CA, at a better value than Napa.

of wine, or a cocktail. And sangria, which we make. Have lots of different recipes and depends on the season which ones we make.

TBS, we always have plenty of wine for when we have company and H likes both reds and white.

I know Far Niente is very high end, which is why I only bought it once and the cheapest bottle I could find.

His parents are lovely people and lovely to my son when he visited. They have classic cars that is open for visitors to see when at the winery. My kid loves cars so he was in 7th heaven.

Exports are only 3-5 percent of the total market. We are (by far) a larger consumer than exporter. I realize this doesn’t fit the narrative. I’m just pointing out that wine exportation is a fledgling market. This isn’t a big deal in the overall scheme of things. When one market closes, you look for another. As a small business owner that is what I’ve dealt with for three decades now. Many times it’s been direct government intervention/regulation that has screwed us. Covid being the latest one that almost put us in the dodo category.

If this madman and his inner circle of ideologically driven ignoramuses won't be reined in by the frightened little rabbits in Congress, then we are headed to not a recession but a full blown depression.

The only good part as the US is first isolated and then sanctioned will be watching the fortunes hidden offshore by tax averse plutocrats get stolen from them. Other than that, we are in for a miserable time because of them.
