House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is calling on a federal judge to set a deadline at a Tuesday hearing for the Trump administration to comply with a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man mistakenly deported to a prison in El Salvador.
In an interview Monday on MSNBCs Inside with Jen Psaki, the Democratic leader stressed the importance of enforcing the Supreme Court ruling and said setting a new deadline is the first step. I think what the court needs to do is to set a deadline as it relates to compliance with the quasi-directive that came down from the Supreme Court related to returning Mr. Garcia, Jeffries said in the interview.
Specify that, and then make sure that it happens, he continued. Jeffries said the court could then take steps to hold members of the Trump administration in contempt if they do not comply with the deadline. The Supreme Court and/or the federal district court actually needs to enforce its order, he said. And the vehicles that are available for the court to do that relate to contempt.
That contempt can be directed at a variety of different members of the Trump administration, including, but not limited to, the secretary of State and/or his or her designees, and the secretary of homeland security and/or his or her designees for the court to determine, Jeffries added.

(24,746 posts)But I doubt the judge is watching him on MSNBC. Put it in writing to the court.
you already have a group planning to visit El Salvador and I expect that "fact finding mission" (as they usually dub these trips) would help inform any amicus briefs that they could submit to the court for the carrying out of the order.

(2,863 posts)He is going full steam ahead. Jeffries is just a bug the felon will ignore. All these law suits are as effective as air. The scotus has rendered themselves useless.

(150,860 posts)There are quite a few on DU who keep insisting that "Democrats are not out there" and how they should "get on some show and advocate" or whatever.
There is currently a group of Democrats who are intending to travel to El Salvador, I expect for "fact finding" -
Democratic lawmakers say they'll travel to El Salvador to push for Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release
The U.S. government PAID to have El Salvador take these people and I guarantee for "the right price" they can be released.

(2,393 posts)Just arrest them, and hold them until Gracia is repatriated. Trouble is, Repubs laugh at court ordered deadlines, because they know they have no teeth. So start arresting Trump's puppets, at the first sign of contempt of court.

(7,640 posts)Certainly not any law enforcement divisions under the DOJ or DHS. The federal courts have no in-house law enforcement division to carry out their orders, theyll need Bondis DOJ to enforce those contempt orders.
