Columbia student detained while attending naturalization ceremony, lawyer says

Another Columbia University student was detained by immigration authorities in direct retaliation for his participation in protests against the Israel-Gaza war, his lawyer said Monday.
Mohsen Mahdawi, who was born and raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank and is a U.S. permanent resident, was taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security during his naturalization interview in Vermont on Monday, according to a filing from the lawyer, Luna Droubi.
The action comes amid a widening and unprecedented crackdown on foreign students. Video posted by a Vermont lawmaker showed three officers, two of whom were masked, escorting Mahdawi in handcuffs to an SUV.
Andrew Delaney, another one of his attorneys, said that Mahdawi is being held in Vermont. A petition challenging his detention says it appears Mahdawi was taken into custody for deportation.

For what it's worth a federal judge has temporarily blocked his removal from the US, but I don't for an instant believe that tRump or ICE give a flying fuck what any judge says.

(51 posts)Legal permanent resident, meaning he has approved status... Attending a naturalization ceremony, meaning he applied for, was vetted, and was about to receive citizenship.... So he literally did everything right. Within the law. Wasn't "illegal" or anything like that. And he speaks out against the government; a right any US citizen (and many would argue any inside the borders and hence covered by the Constitution) and now he is facing deportation? Revocation of status? Having his pending US citizenship cancelled outright?
This seems... Excessive. Evil. Un-American.
