5.2-magnitude earthquake strikes San Diego area, jolting Southern California near San Andreas system fault

Source: KCAL

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near San Diego at 10:08 a.m. Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was recorded 2.49 miles south of Julian, in San Diego County.

According to the USGS map, the quake was felt widely across Southern California and into Mexico.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said this earthquake is likely associated with the Elsinore Fault, which is a branch of the larger San Andreas Fault system. Jones said the depth of the quake was about eight miles below the surface of the Earth.

I've been busy. It's now "weeds growing to the sky" season and they are a fire hazard when they dry out. At least 100 ft. around the house, per Cal Fire.

Neighbor's riding mower conked out, so I am looking for help or I'll (GASP) have to get a lawn mower and do it myself a little at a time.

Being a Californian native, I've been in a few earthquakes. This one was crazy. My house was bouncing all over the place. I happened to be in bed, having only gone to bed a few hours prior. Four poster bed, and I swear it felt like there were 10 very strong men shaking the living daylights out of it!

I expected everything to be off the walls and on the floor, but not one thing was moved. Unbelievable.

We even have a "today's earthquakes" tracker.

It's probably very weird if one isn't used to them, though.

At our house, wine bottles fell off a wine rack. I'm probably 30 to 50 miles away as the crow flies. I was at the chiropractor when it hit and all the doctors and patients came running out of the rooms.

The county sent a shake alert that came within seconds of when the shaking started, so we all knew right away that it was as quake, not a sonic boom or truck going by, so people ran under doorways.

Boulders came down and blocked a rural highway, and a lot of people had minor messes to clean up, but so far I haven't heard of any structural or infrastructure damage other than a power outage that was restored within hours near the epicenter.

The scary part is this fault line is capable of a 7.5--more than 20 times stronger than today's moderate quake.

I've experienced worse between 1986--1987. There were about 4 earthquakes over 5.5 within months.

That was when I remember seeing trees swaying at 5AM when I ran to my door. After that I kept a pair of shoes and jeans by the door. I 'd only moved to CA in 1984 so this was new to me.

I've felt all sorts of earthquakes...there really is a difference!

In 1986 my mattress was on my floor and when I was asleep and felt it I thought a bugler was under my bed then I realized..uh oh!

One year (2008 or 2009) at 3PM I felt a BOOM! On the roof of my 1st grade classroom. It was an odd quake. No shaking at all, just BOOM! I'm glad my 1st graders had already gone home. I made them practice drills all the time. Go under your desk, put your arm over your head and hold onto the desk leg. My real plan was to run the class out to the center of the playground since there were no trees, overhead wires or buildings could hurt them.

I even give Red Cross disaster backpacks as gifts to my family after I received one from a friend.
