The Harrisburg man charged with the attempted homicide of Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family for setting three fires in the Pennsylvania governors residence turned himself in to State Police on Sunday afternoon and admitted to harboring a hatred toward Shapiro, according to the criminal complaint.
Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, evaded police while on the property, breaking a window and throwing a Heineken beer bottle filled with gasoline into the piano room in a wing of the governors mansion in Harrisburg, according to the criminal complaint. He then went to the attached dining room, broke a window, entered the residence, and lit two more homemade Molotov cocktails before fleeing on foot.
Its unclear how State Police, who have a 24/7 detail assigned to Shapiro and additional security at the governors residence, allowed Balmer to enter the property, start a fire, then break into the building and start two more fires before fleeing on foot without apprehension.
Balmer was taken to an area hospital due to a medical event not connected to this incident nor his arrest, police said Monday. Because of this, his arraignment was canceled and will be rescheduled.

Balmers ex called police and said that Balmer had confessed to her and wanted her to call police to turn him in, according to the complaint. Balmer then appeared at State Police headquarters in Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon to turn himself in.

(1,203 posts)"Balmer told investigators he hated Shapiro and that if he found him at the property early Sunday morning, he would have beaten him with a hammer he had brought with him to break into the residence, according to the complaint. "
And apparently this isn't the only time he was influenced by the Mango Menace:
"In another case, Balmer pleaded guilty in 2016 to forgery and theft by deception charges, court documents show. "

(4,732 posts)done this at like 8:00 pm, NOT 2:00 AM. At 2:00 AM, he had to know that everybody would be asleep in bed, far away from where he entered. If his goal was to hurt someone, he was trying to do that by lighting the fire, NOT by beating someone with a hammer.
And this guy absolutely had planned an escape route. He carried out his plan very efficiently and probably was on the property for no more than 2 or 3 minutes total.

That article also said he was mad about losing his house. That could flip a not very stable person esp because he has a family.

But, there's another problem. More municipalities than ever are disbanding their local police forces (because local cops are expensive) and depending on the PSP for police services. It has surely put a strain on their manpower resources.

(4,732 posts)The arson charge is a slam dunk - guaranteed conviction - he admitted he committed arson. His only way to avoid it is through a so-called "insanity" defense which would have a very, very small chance of succeeding at best.
Walleye
(39,622 posts)Wiz Imp
(4,732 posts)And that one is less clear cut. Based on what I've read, he didn't say he knew the Governor was there, just that he knew that the Governor might be there. I don't know if that will make a difference or not - I admit I don't know the specifics of the law. However, I believe if his primary goal was to kill the Governor, he wouldn't have done this at 2:00 AM, but rather chosen a time when he could be sure he would be there. I'm not defending the guy, just pointing out that an attempted murder charge isn't nearly as sure a conviction as arson is.
Walleye
(39,622 posts)I guess we dont have to wonder where he got that idea. But yes, I think the story will come out that he was pissed off about his property being sold so it follows he would do a property crime. Against the state too. of course, you never know with an ongoing investigation what will turn up

(113,216 posts)but what remains is that this is a weak minded, weak brained individual with murderous impulses who will be in prison for a very long time. If we're lucky, he won't be let out until he forgets who he's angry at and how to set fires.
Even if he's plea bargained down to destruction of public property, he's not going to be in circulation for a while.

(150,860 posts)but apparently the guy had it methodically planned out - he walked an hour to the residence, jumped the fence, hurled a molotov through a window allowing him to get in, and then tossed 2 more molotovs in the room he broke into, and then exited back out the same window - all within minutes.
That is what was pretty much relayed on our local Philly news radio repoet this afternoon as an update. The guy's mother claims he has mental health issues and was off his meds.
I expect like many homes here in Philly, they will need to put some decorative bars on those windows. I know the house I grew up in, we had bars - although they were inside ones - and we had window locks as well. My mom also planted thorny shrubs (pyracantha) right under the windows as a deterrent.
It had whorls of white flowers that produced orange berries in summer like this -
But per its "common name" - "Firethorn" - the thorns on it were lethal!
Had to pull out the heavy gloves when pruning it! The birds were happy to have some berries in winter though.

(150,860 posts)That was one of "in plants" back then! Our neighbors had another prickly one - barberries.
We also had a back stone wall that was lined with "Blaze" climbing roses (another 50s/60s plant - in fact, when we moved there in the '60s, the previous owner had a whole tea rose garden in the backyard).
On that side of the house with the pyracantha, she also had a pieris (a/k/a Andromeda) and a weigela.
My mom planted stuff so she could have something blooming all through the growing season!

(97,244 posts)My college boyfriend introduced me to the concept his parents owned a motel, a cute place with a swimming pool for those hot SoCal days. Anyway, he pointed out that all the plants had thorns, because they didnt want the guests kids running thru the shrubbery.
Later on I discovered the concept could be part of home security. Personally I only liked pyracantha at some remove because I used to have to do all my own gardening and those thorns are vicious. Now that I am old and have a gardener, hes totally able to deal with anything and there is one pyracantha in the hedge that is ginormous. It is so gorgeous I periodically take a photo of its seasonal displays.
BumRushDaShow
(150,860 posts)for "a thorny barrier" are obviously roses. Not so much the "specimen" tea roses but the "climbing" ones and more recently, the "Knock-Out" roses, which are basically hybridized shrub roses.
I have also seen people use a hedge of flowering shrub quince (vs the tree one) -
I remember when my sister had first moved to her current house almost 25 years ago, someone in her neighborhood had a sheared shrub with those cool flowers. I finally identified what it was.
Of course out where you are, I expect people use bougies!
Love the neon hot pink ones! Obviously not hardy where I am but I did try a potted one (when I had it, I was living where I really didn't get enough sun for it)

took us past Kapoho, a town that had been slowly but inexorably covered by lava when I was a kid on Oahu. It was not a barren wasteland, but had an abundance of ferns and bougainvillea, sinking their roots into places where the molten lava had bubbled and when cooled later caught rain. Just amazing.

A friend in DC introduced me to them. I've seen lovely photos of the white washed buildings on the Greek isles with bougies over flowing the roof tops! 🥰🥰
Love climbing roses, too! 🩷
BumRushDaShow
(150,860 posts)You see them featured in Italy and Greece against the stucco walls by doorways. trained espalier-style, or spilling over stone walls. They are definitely full sun plants and that is why they thrive in places like Arizona too. It's just that they can form a thorny thicket - but then that was what they were used for - a "deterrent"!
