Johnson: US must 'eliminate people on Medicaid' who are not 'eligible to be there'

Source: The Hill

04/13/25 4:30 PM ET

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Sunday that Republicans would protect entitlement programs as they press ahead with deep cuts to federal spending, but he added the government must “eliminate people on Medicaid” who are not “eligible to be there.”

“The president has made absolutely clear many times, as we have as well, that we’re going to protect Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, for people who are legally beneficiaries of those programs,” Johnson told Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.” “There are a lot of Americans who rely upon those — those programs, and we’ve got to ensure that they’re safeguarded,” he said.

“At the same time, we have to root out fraud, waste and abuse, we have to eliminate on, for example, on Medicaid who are not actually eligible to be there. Able-bodied workers, for example, young men, who are — who should never be on the program at all,” he added.

“And … when you have people on the program that are draining the resources, it takes it away from the people that are actually needing it the most and are intended to receive it. You’re talking about young single mothers down on their fortunes at the moment, the people with the real disabilities, the elderly.”

If he actually gave a shit about women and "mothers", he wouldn't keep trying to block proxy voting for pregnant women who happen to be members of Congress.

Okay then, why are you not going after the real wastes and abuses?

Are you looking at the military budgets and spending?
Are you looking at how taxes are set and the waste fraud, and abuses within that? (Because of the complete bias in taxation. The rich get off paying little or nothing while the poorer you are, the more expensive everything is.)
Are you looking at general federal spending and where that goes?

No, you are not doing this because of 'fraud, waste, and abuse', you are solely attacking the programs that help people and keep them from being forced to work till they drop making around 800 of your fellow leeches richer. Yo are going after the programs that you don't like. Not the ones that need to be examined.

At least stop lying about it. Oh wait, you are a rethug. You can't.

Make it look like the Poor deserve to suffer, so that nobody's watching the Rich scoop up the savings.

You have to jump through every kind of hoop imaginable to qualify for Medicaid, and basically be destitute.

He made the other day. He stated that "young, healthy men were hanging out playing video games all day and collecting a check" which is not how Medicaid works. It's health insurance, not some check you get in the mail.

Explain it to me like I'm 5 yrs old: why had no reporter challenged him on this assertion and demanded to know how many young able bodied young men are on Medicaid that should not be and exactly how much is it projected to be saved?

But how many would he need to remove to hit the $1.5 T? Many more than he is even talking about.
