Bernie Sanders Crashes Coachella Music Festival

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) played the political equivalent of his greatest hits during a surprise appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Saturday. The 83-year-old progressive icon took the stage ahead of indie pop artist Clairos performance to deliver a fiery speech, where he raged against President Donald Trump, corporate greed and the billionaire class.
Rallying young voters to defend democracy, Sanders told audiences, This country faces some very difficult challenges. The future of what happens to America is dependent upon your generation. You can turn away and ignore what goes on, but if you do, you do it at your own peril. We need you to stand up and fight for justice, to fight for economic justice, racial justice and social justice.
Boos echoed through the crowd as Sanders began to sound off against the president.
He thinks that climate change is a hoax, the senator continued. He is dangerously wrong, and you and I are going to have to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and tell them to stop destroying this planet.

And yes, has crafted much legislation: everything from 10% caps on credit cards to universal health care...
Bernie bashing will never end.

(9,083 posts)legislative success. I personally like his message much more than my elected Reps/Senators but being a Texan that is not saying much.
For liberals/progressives like myself, I appreciate hearing someone express my viewpoints. Otherwise I consider most of the congress simply "paid employees" of their donors.
IMO, our nation needs more not less progressives in Congress. I'm 74, so I know it won't happen in my lifetime but I can hope!!

(2,682 posts)Senators Sanders is a great Democratic ally. You can tell that by what is actions are like traveling the USA fighting for our democracy. Him and AOC and a few others. I dont see any other prominent lefties or Democrats doing this - do you?

(20,007 posts)From Jan 1991 to Apr 2025, Sanders missed 825 of 6,158 roll call votes, which is 13.4%. This is much worse than the median of 2.8% among the lifetime records of senators currently serving. The chart below reports missed votes over time.

That would have been far more to the point, IMO. Except that back then, campuses were all holding rallies that effectively suppressed the vote against Harris, with the totally false narrative that Biden was responsible for the misery in Gaza (completely untrue, but the people at the campus rallies were not in listening mode, they were too busy cosplaying with their gear ordered on Amazon). No one will ever convince me that part of the strategy was to defeat Harris. While I realize many kids showed up in good faith, I think the stagers, err, organizers, had a concealed agenda.

(5,026 posts)I assume you mean 2024 and are too full of blind hatred to get the year right. Bernie was all over the country in 2024 campaigning for Harris.

(29,112 posts)I am not full of blind hatred. I think Bernie's support of Harris (and Hillary Clinton) was rather tepid. He may have done a few events but he wasn't in the news for holding huge rallies and he didn't go to any campus events that I heard of in say, Ann Arbor or Madison.

(145 posts)Bernie has a progressive populist economic message that builds on the New Deal and connects to FDR, the founder of the modern Democratic Party. Just read Roosevelts Second Bill of Rights, Four Freedoms, proposal to cap the income of the wealthy, etc. To improve living conditions for working class people and middle class we have to provide social services and build infrastructure. And must stop climate change. This isnt an alternative to identity politics or rights based agenda, it is a foundation for it.
