Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from new tariffs

Source: CNBC

Published Sat, Apr 12 2025 9:19 AM EDT | Updated 13 Min Ago

Smartphones and computers are among many tech devices and components that will be exempted from reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, according to new guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The guidance, issued late Friday evening, comes after Trump earlier this month imposed 145% tariffs on products from China, a move that threatened to take a toll on tech giants like Apple, which makes iPhones and most of its other products in China.

The guidance also includes exclusions for other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells, flat panel TV displays, flash drives, and memory cards.

These products could eventually be subject to additional duties, but they are likely to be far lower than the 145% rate that Trump had imposed on goods from China. The exemptions are a win for tech companies like Apple, which makes more than 80% of its products in China. The country manufactures 80% of iPads and more than half of Mac computers produced, according to Evercore ISI.

People make the mistake of analyzing Krasnov's tariff policy in economic terms. Krasnov's imposition of tariffs was nothing more than a mob boss' protection racket. You pay me money or I will ruin your business. I just see that India must have sent Krasnov suitcases full of money. Botany predicted this; We have been getting prescription drugs from India for decades. Now that India has made a "deal" (suitcases filled with money) watch Krasnov remove tariffs from prescription drugs. Botany gets credit for this one if it happens.

Krasnov doesn't give a darn about inflation or a recession, he only cares about extorting people to pay him money.

As he learned when Canada, Japan, and the EU forced him to pause the tariffs because of all the Treasury Bonds they hold, he doesn’t have any cards. He can’t control demand in the US other than to strangle it which will piss everyone off.

He set up a game where he’s the mark.

First, a forgiven tariff, if not for all, is a subsidy (loss of revenue to wherever Trump thinks revenue will be after collecting it). So, now, American taxpayers are subsidizing cheap labor in China??? I guess what I am questioning is how does Apple move "manufacturing" to the US when it is cheaper to stay where they are?

Jim Cramer has been multiple times this week asking "Why is Apple being punished when they did what tRump asked for in tRump 1.0" (my paraphrase). I don't watch him, but I've seen him multiple times because I've had CNBC on in the background a lot these last ten days.

After the 2018 tRump tariff taxes against China, Apple (and other companies like Nike and Lululemon) did what was asked: they shifted some or a lot of production out of China and into Vietnam and India. Then wham heavy on again off again on again pause again.

Is this exemption permanent or just for the 90 days while non-China tariffs are paused. Who knows. Not even tRump knows. Depends whether he talked to Bessent last or Navarro (Ron Vara) last.
