Hillary Clinton warns women over House GOP voting bill

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned women about a just-passed House bill that she says could make it harder for them to vote. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act passed Thursday in a 220-208 vote in the House would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections and impose voter roll purge requirements on states.
Clinton, the first woman to lead a major partys presidential ticket, said the bill could effectively disenfranchise women whose married names dont match the names on their birth certificates. The House just passed the Republican voter suppression measure that threatens voting access for millions of Americans, including 69 million women whose married names dont match their birth certificates, Clinton, former secretary of State, wrote on X Thursday. Make sure your senators know you expect them to stand against it, she added.
Ahead of Thursdays House vote, Clinton posted a similar message, urging women to call their House representatives and encourage them to vote against the bill. She attached a graphic showing the estimated number of female citizens ages 15 and older in each state whose names dont match their birth certificates due to last name change or hyphenation upon marriage.
Are you a woman who changed your name when you got married? Congress is considering a bill that could make it much harder for you to vote. Call your repthis is not a drill, she wrote Wednesday.

(5,602 posts)I'll never forgive those who went all scorched-earth on Hillary and the Democratic party. And those treacherous individuals (plural) who, because of ego, did their level best to kneecap and sabotage Hillary and the Democratic party with their lies and betrayal. They know who they are.

(9,825 posts)My moderate independent Congressman, Brian Fitzpatrick (PA 01) voted for this bullshit. I left some very unkind words on his FB page. Not that he cares.
Everyone should get a card passport. Wasnt that hard to get and good for 10 years. Apparently this will he good enough proof whereas a Real ID wont be.

We need to make the SE PA Congressional delegation, all-blue again!!!
And agree about the passport card. I have recommended that to people on DU - particularly if they are in the process of renewing a passport (and the card can be purchased at a discount when doing it at that same time as the passport renewal).

(150,860 posts)He (Ed Case) was one of the (D)s who voted for the SAVE Act - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143437692
Cuellar and Golden were definitely on my Bingo card for nutjob votes but the other two (including Case) were not.
I have seen Jill Tokuda (HI-2) out there more and she is relatively new.

(20,217 posts)$30 application fee plus a $35 acceptance fee. That's going to price a lot of people right out of being able to vote, including those with the lowest incomes and the inability to scrape up an extra $65 after paying their rent, buying food, etc. (Which I'm sure the GOP would consider a feature, not a bug.)
My husband and I could manage it, but I would not feel good about it, knowing how many people were now disenfranchised through no fault of their own.

(27,709 posts)to have her apply for a Real ID license. She needed birth certificate, Social Security card, marriage license from a courthouse, and 2 proofs of residence. She was told she should receive her license in 7 to 10 days.
We did this to protect her voting rights.

(2,040 posts)Even with all that she had to furnish to get the Real ID, that card does not indicate actual citizenship on it. It will not be accepted as proof of eligibility to vote. She will need a passport, or a birth certificate -- and if relying on a birth certificate, that's only good if her current last name matches the one on the BC.
That's the problem with this bill for millions of women who changed their last names when they got married.

(24 posts)What's funny with this is that the repugs don't realize that repug women also get married and change their name. Then they need to change their voter registration. I know 2 dem women who got married and never changed their last name. Karma is coming. This would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

(12,357 posts)kept their name. I was in my religious phase when I married first time so I changed name and I liked it better than my long maiden name. Second time I liked my name but knew hubby would be hurt if I kept ex's name so changed to his.
But I have a passport and so far it says good enough for ID.

(85,881 posts)I liked my name! And then prospective husband comes along and when the topic comes up, he says I wouldnt want to change my name so I dont see why you should change yours.
Really? I think that was my answer. And then I thought GRAB this guy before he gets away!

(12,357 posts)kept her name when she married and husband changed to her last name, as he had been abused as a child and wanted to rid of name.
So he not having passport will have hard time voting if this goes through.
