New Mexico governor mobilizes National Guard to tackle crime emergency in Albuquerque

Source: NBC News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in New Mexico’s largest city, saying that a significant increase in crime in Albuquerque warrants the help of the New Mexico National Guard.

She signed an executive order, clearing the way for several dozen troops to be deployed along the historic Route 66 corridor starting in mid-May. The order also frees up state funds for the National Guard to use as part of the effort.

Training for 60 to 70 troops already is underway, the governor’s office said.

Governors typically call up the National Guard to help with natural disasters like wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. Governors in recent years also have ordered troops to address illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. In New York last year, the National Guard helped patrol the subway system following a series of high-profile crimes.

That the national quard will be used to free cops up - like staying at a crime scene, transporting prisoners, directing traffic ,giving assistance to the homeless etc They will not have guns or be in a uniform. They will be wearing tees & do what police aids do - to free up police from doing mundane stuff.

CRIME IS DOWN IN ALB

“ APD showed off quarter-year statistics that indicated large decreases in crime, compared with 2024, and said the extra help could get those numbers down further.

“What we want to do is double down on what’s working … and what’s working is technology and civilians … freeing up officers to fight crime and keep those statistics going in this powerfully good direction,” Keller said. “A short-term way to help with that is by the National Guardsmen helping out.”

Which is why all the action is slated for a bit more than a month from now.

In other words, not really an emergency.

...then the President of the US cannot do it. The Governor retains control. So if Dump tries to call a national emergency to lock up protestors for instance, then he will not have control of the NM National Guard. So it's potentially a smart, anti-fascist move.

I agree completely with you and am also delighted to hear about our governor's intentions re the National Guard. If she can keep them busy on local duty they can't be commandeered by the President's men for their nefarious whatchamacallits, or whatever this clown posse is planning.

That's what a lot here said Biden should have done last year when Abbott ignored the Supreme Court's order last year with the barbed wire.
