China slaps retaliatory tariffs of 84% on U.S. goods in response to Trump

Source: CNBC

Published Wed, Apr 9 2025 7:09 AM EDT Updated 3 Min Ago

China has pushed back once again to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies by hiking its levies on U.S. imports to more than 80%. China’s Office of the Tariff Commission of the State Council said tariffs on U.S. goods will rise to 84% from 34% starting on April 10, according to a translation of the announcement. This comes after the latest U.S. tariff hike — which brings levies on Chinese goods to more than 100% — took effect at the start of April 9.

The repeated escalation of the tariffs threatens to bring trade between two of the world’s most important economies to a standstill. According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. exported $143.5 billion of goods to China in 2024, while importing $438.9 billion of goods.

The Trump administration announced a sweeping new tariff policy last week, and warned other countries not to retaliate. Some nations, including Japan, have seemed willing to negotiate on tariffs, but China appears to be taking a more hardline stance and quickly announced a countertariff. After China’s initial response to the April 2 tariff rollout, Trump announced an additional 50% hike, putting the total level for import taxes on Chinese goods at 104%.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the Chinese actually don’t want to come and negotiate, because they are the worst offenders in the international trading system,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said to Fox Business on Wednesday after China’s latest announcement. “They have the most imbalanced economy in the history of the modern world, and I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them.”

The Dollar stores (various companies) are full of that.

The U.S. does NOT "own the means of production" so we are screwed because of greed, which pushed for the "outsourcing" and "offshoring" of our manufacturing in order to use cheap labor, and maximum profits.

Just pick up a typical item in your residence and flip it over to see where it is made.

I know we in the U.S. continually go through periods of frantic talk about looking for items with a "Made in the USA" sticker on them!

It was to the point where there was more and more use of the "Assembled in the U.S." printing on items to make it look like it was a "U.S.-made product", and even Apple introduced its idiotic "Designed by Apple in California" that is added to its "Assembled in China" wording on their products.

I recently bought a new little CC SKYWAVE (C. Crane) portable AM/FM/Shortwave/Weather/Air Band radio and flipping it over right now, it says "Made in China".

I have a rare one though - a "Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse" that I bought a couple months ago that says "Made in Vietnam".

I do have one of those KitchenAid 5qt stand mixers and THAT tank is made in the U.S.

We really were the “shining city on the hill”. People in castles don’t MAKE anything, that’s for the peons down the hill to do…or have them come up to do it in the castle.

Dollar Store - I bought this thing there in the middle 90’s that I still have and even now I think about where it was made and who made it. It’s a black steel hatchet with a hammer head opposite the hatchett and a crow bar end up from the handle. Rubber handle. I’m pretty sure I bought it at a Dollar Store. If they sold this for $1 (with transport) what kind of ungodly foundry operation that must’ve come out of? I still have it hanging in the wall in the garage. I told my daughter it was my go-to Zombie apocalypse tool - she said it’d be a good one.

I bought when I was mountain biking a lot and camping.

Sounds like a camping trip I was on at a city park. We didn’t have means to get more wood so someone bent over a tree into the fire. Several park rangers came out of the woods. All directions. One just put his hand out to my friend and confiscated the item he was currently using - not for tobacco. One said “You have 10 minutes to break this place down and leave or you’re going to jail.” We packed everything and 10 people into my Buick real quick like.

"Aviation...Boeing stands to be one of the biggest casualties of the new tariffs, which will make its aircraft significantly more expensive compared to competitors Airbus and China’s state-owned COMAC."

"Semiconductors...China imports roughly $10 billion worth of semiconductors from the U.S. annually, with Intel’s CPUs accounting for about $8 billion of that figure, according to analysts at Bernstein. These chips are widely used in laptops and servers, and in 2024, China became Intel’s largest market, contributing 29% of its total revenue."

"Farm Equipment...The U.S. farm equipment sector faces additional pressure as China’s new tariff comes on top of an earlier 10% levy imposed in March. The combined duties are likely to impact leading American manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Deere & Co, and AGCO."

"Agriculture...The U.S. agricultural sector could suffer the most under the new tariffs. China is the largest overseas market for American agricultural exports, and the steep tariffs threaten to significantly reduce demand."

If you think supply chains were bad during COVID-19, you haven't seen anything yet. Remember the empty shelves for toilet paper? Buckle up because that was nothing compared to what is coming next. And this time it will include food because ICE has rounded up the farm workers harvesting the food. This gives new meaning to "stupid". Think of food shortages for fast food outlets. Panic time straight ahead.

White supremacists feel they are "superior" to everyone else and that includes men from "non-white" countries.

And this part -

If you think supply chains were bad during COVID-19, you haven't seen anything yet.

Not even getting into the worker problem, during the first administration and during COVID, there were tariffs on China pretty much solely. NOW we're talking globally.

The U.S. makes its own toilet paper and although people hoarded it, creating a "supply" issue, that was self-induced. But this time having tariffs on the ACTUAL WOOD PULP used to make that paper (mostly from Canada), is definitely going to impact those paper product companies. But then I guess if you have a bidet in your bathroom, it's not a big deal.

31. The problem with Trump's strategy
Wed Apr 9, 2025, 12:51 PM
Apr 9

is what’s the end game.

Is he going to increase tariffs another 100%?

And then when China retaliates?

Sooner rather than later the tariff becomes irrelevant because trade is completely shut down.

And then what?

Trump is a one trick pony and it won’t take long of no imports from China before all but the most MAGAist of MAGAs realise something has gone very wrong. Not only will prices increase dramatically, but there will be shortages of basic consumer goods. And I’m 99% certain that the Chinese are better equipped to handle a protracted trade war and will be less affected by it.

Edit: My title implies that Trump has a strategy. He does not unless you count endless escalation as a strategy.

Modern China's economy is newer than America's so not yet as diverse but it's still at least as competitive. When it comes to engineering and manufacturing China is often better than the USA -- investing in education and having a rational industrial policy works. In addition to manufacturing might China's soft power initiatives that have flown under the radar of most Americans have greatly increased China's global influence.
