Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who co-sponsored bipartisan legislation to limit President Trumps trade authority, said Tuesday that he thinks Congress has delegated too much authority to the president. I made very clear throughout my public service that Im a free and fair trader.
The Constitution gives Congress the authority to regulate interstate and foreign commerce. I believe that Congress delegated too much authority to the president in the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and Trade Act of 1974, Grassley said.
That said, I support President Trumps agenda to lower tariffs and non-tariff barriers other countries impose on American goods. I support President Trumps agenda to get a better deal from China and other countries for our farmers and manufacturers, he added. His comments Tuesday morning came as the Senate Finance Committee heard testimony from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer as part of a hearing focused on the presidents trade policy agenda.
During the hearing, Grassley pointed to Trumps recent sweeping tariffs, while noting retaliation from other countries after the president levied a 10 percent base tariff on imports from nearly all foreign trading partners last week, as well as higher reciprocal taxes on many of them.

(61,420 posts)Particularly the second time after he betrayed his oath, summoned and directed a mob to attack the United States Congress after lying repeatedly about a stolen election.
Meanwhile he's done nothing during his second term except undermine the best interests of the nation on every level, whether it be social, economics, justice, national security or moral.
The fact that you haven't impeached him yet undermines any stated concern about giving him too much authority.
Riding a tricycle is too much power for him, much less occupying the highest office in the land.
Thanks for the thread BumRushDaShow

(697 posts)By leaving this at Johnson's feet. I guess there's nothing the Senate can do?
I'm sure the American farmers will understand as their farms are auctioned off. Chuck has done all he can. We'll, the Republicans will have nothing to worry about, I'm sure.

(6,807 posts)Youre a Senator with actual power to correct that fuckup so throw your gelatinous mass of dead weight behind our efforts to take that power back! Oh thats right that would require you to have principles and values and to honor your oath to the Constitution and your duty to the people of your state and this country who are being pummeled by your major aiding and abetting of this calamity. Problem is Charlie the truth is youre now nothing but a Trumpian lickspittle who will become mightily and justly reviled just as he is. 🤬🤬

Your silence up until now represents the largest delegation of Congressional power to a president in the history of the nation.

(36,702 posts)But it's just part of a larger tendency that Congress has had in granting too much power to the Executive branch.
The same problem that (R) have with administrators making rules with fines, running administrative courts that levy fines, etc., etc., reaches the Oval Office. Congress should take back the authority that the Constitution granted it.
