Trump, Putin agree to Russia-Ukraine energy infrastructure ceasefire for 30 days
Source: Reuters
Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Tuesday to a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump that Russia and Ukraine cease attacking each other's energy infrastructure for 30 days, the Kremlin said following a lengthy phone discussion between the leaders.
The two countries plan to begin negotiations "immediately" in the Middle East on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, according to a readout from the White House.

Sounds like this mostly benefits Putin, and he can continue killing Ukraine's civilians and destroying their homes.
Some "ceasefire"...

And enjoying it.

So he can keep killing Ukraine's people, and Ukraine can't attack his refineries and ships.
This is NOT a real ceasefire.

A frank exchange in a phone call is usually a diplomatic nicety for sharp differences of opinion, bordering on a row.
President Trump may well be privately disappointed that he has not been able to get his Russian counterpart to sign up to the comprehensive 30-day ceasefire deal - on land, sea and in the air - that his team thrashed out recently with the Ukrainians in Jeddah.
But the 30-day pause in attacks on energy infrastructure, as announced today, will still come as a relief to war weary Ukrainian civilians.
Militarily, that may not necessarily suit Ukraine. While its ground forces have been pulling back, both in Kursk and in parts of the frontline in Ukraine, its long-range drone attacks have been scoring a lot of direct hits on Russian oil installations. This in turn has had an impact on Russian military logistics, but will now have to pause.
Here in Germany President Putin was described today by the Defence Minister Boris Pistorius as the greatest threat to European security. Speaking before the Trump-Putin phone call, he said Putins actions and reactions proved he had no interest in peace.

This is solely about protecting Russian refineries and then Russian ships in the Black Sea, the Russian targets Putin is most concerned about.
This ceasefire would cripple Ukraine's ability to respond effectively to Russian aggression.

(718 posts)Am I missing something? Did President Zelensky give the Felon his proxy with carte blanche to negotiate on his behalf? Since when does the "readout from the Whitehouse" become trusted journalism.
"The Kremlin said" Well that's good enough I guess. Where does the article say "after speaking with, Ukrainian officials or even unamed source for Ukraine?"
So if Ukraine doesn't agree or they do fire on an energy structure or doesn't now begin negotiating maritime cease fires then Ukraine is at fault and becomes the bad guy?
Nice try Vlad and Whitehouse and Reuters for getting their narrative out.

I don't see any possible partial ceasefire like this lasting long, and as having anything other than symbolic value anyway.
Still Russia hedges the agreement with arrogant unrealistic demands.
If the Ukrainians don't play ball, no fair-minded rational actor could judge them harshly.

(5,397 posts)that Russia was at war with the united states, instead of Ukraine. I don't care what the issue is, if it impacts that war, nothing should happen without Ukraine's knowledge and consent. Trump has made it clear he doesn't represent Ukraine, or hold it in any kind of sovereign respect. This is just busybody, nosy, "look at me" performance art from trump. But the war is killing REAL people. He needs to butt out.
