More egg products seized at the border than fentanyl since the start of this year

Source: The Independent

Monday 17 March 2025 23:24 EDT

U.S. border agents have made more seizures of eggs and egg-based products than of fentanyl since the beginning of this year, official statistics show. According to data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), officials made 134 interceptions of the deadly drug in January and February 2025, compared to 197 the previous year. But that was nothing compared to the 3,254 egg-related seizures during the same period — more than twice as many as the same two months in 2024.

The figures, first reported by Canadian business news website The Logic, only track the number of “seizure events” logged by CBP for each type of contraband, rather than the actual amount. The latter comparison is not possible because CBP only releases the weight of drugs it has seized, not the weight of agricultural products.

Nevertheless, it illustrates the growing scale of egg smuggling as prices soared as high as $8.05 per dozen on average due to avian flu outbreaks and, allegedly, price gouging by the highly concentrated poultry industry.

It also undermines the rationale for Donald Trump's trade war against Mexico and Canada, which he claims is necessary to stop fentanyl flooding into the U.S. but which opponents say will raise the price of everyday products. (Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reported that less than 1 percent of fentanyl intercepted at the U.S. border comes from Canada.)

Wonder how many of those eggs are taken home by border agents?

It illustrates that eggs were much cheaper in Mexico and American tourists didn’t know that it was illegal to bring eggs across the border.

Family drives to Tijuana for the day and stops by the Mercado. Lots of things are cheaper there - including eggs - so they buy a couple dozen. On the way home they’re asked if they have anything to declare… only to find out that they can’t legally bring in eggs. There’s no fine or other enforcement action - except that the eggs are “seized”.

It isn't smugglers with truckloads of eggs as much as people who bought a few extra dozen while shopping and getting pinched at the border.

But, it is kind of funny to see the perverse set of circumstances that puts egg "smuggling" right up there with drug smuggling!

I think I'll pay the extra for the authorized version.

I’m done. I don’t whether or not I should be laughing or leaping off a cliff screaming😣!
I’ve watched the narrative evolve over time to the point that I’m no longer surprised by what’s going on on in this NEVER great country.
Orange-tanned Hitler wannabe. Bigotry being rewarded. Richest man in the world dismantling the government.
But, now we have eggs being “smuggled” into the country? I can’t anymore.. It’s too much🤪
