Ukraine Must Cede Territory in Any Peace Deal, Rubio Says
Source: New York Times
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that Ukraine would have to make concessions over land that Russia had taken since 2014 as part of any agreement to end the war.
Mr. Rubio spoke as he was flying to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for talks with senior Ukrainian officials, and 10 days after a contentious White House meeting between President Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. The Trump administration halted military aid to Ukraine after the blowup, which centered on Mr. Trumps refusal to include any security guarantees in a proposed deal involving Ukraines natural resources.
The most important thing that we have to leave here with is a strong sense that Ukraine is prepared to do difficult things, like the Russians are going to have to do difficult things to end this conflict or at least pause it in some way, shape or form, Mr. Rubio told reporters.

Tough scoobies for all the landowners there. They might do ok after the Russians teach them to speak Russian and live without rights or any freedom.
Sure. Let's just all start giving other's people's lands to Russia. Seems legit. I bet Trump will get some money on the side, but he will have to find a new sketchy bank thru which to launder it all.

(8,572 posts)any starting position is highly likely to worsen at Trump's whim. So far, any move by Ukraine to comply with any demands from the US has been taken as a sign of weakness and led to more conditions being set for them.
On the other hand, no demands at all have been made of Russia. Indeed, all it's said publicly about the talks so far is that it has no intention of compromising on any issues. But Trump the mindreader says that Putin wants peace and that's good enough for Trump, and we're supposed to nod along.
This is not a negotiation, it's a stick-up. Ukraine's international allies know this, but for the moment it's necessary to play along with Trump to see what may end up being on offer as the stakes are high. Meanwhile, the allies have their own stances. I think it's only a matter of time before the current "negotiations" are dismissed, as all that's happening is the American side is looking to make nice with Russia. That has nothing beneficial to do with Ukraine's future, or indeed Europe's, but Trump's trying to pretend it does.
Nevertheless, I still object strongly to your framing it as Zelensky having said "something similar". That's bullshit. Ignoring his vital proviso of NATO membership twists his intention out of all recognition. Trump and co. are doing plenty of that already and don't need any help.
As for your "guarantee", what's that worth?

It seems to me the only one having to do the gard things is Ukraine. Why do Ukrainians that don't want to be Russians have to be unless they move from their homes, because the UNITED STATES says their homes must be Russian now.

(3,248 posts)could fuck up a steel ball. Russia signed a treaty with Ukraine in 1997 with the promise not to invade each other. Guess who broke that treaty in 2014? Anything that Rubio tries to get anyone to sign will be immediately worthless. It's the same old 'if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.' As long as Putin is in power Russia cannot be trusted! Ever!
Rubio is so far out of his depth right now he could drown in a half-inch of water... or just trying to drink some.

(14 posts)One of Putin's close allies is demands Alaska be "returned" to Russia because Russia was "robbed" when the US purchased it off Russia in 1867. Why doesn't Rubio offer Alaska as a gift to his Russian masters instead of territory that does not belong to the US, since he is so interested in peace.

(4,604 posts)Marco's territory position is this:
In 1932-1933 the Holodomor, a genocide against the Ukrainians primarily living in the Donbas region was committed by Russia. If they give the Russians the Donbas, it will be an endorsement of genocide.
In 1944, the Russians ethnically cleansed Crimea of the Crimean Tatars. This is also widely recognized as a genocide.
Why in the hell are we rewarding Russia for genocide?
