LONDON (AP) — A cargo ship hit a tanker transporting jet fuel for the U.S. military off eastern England on Monday, setting both vessels ablaze and sending fuel pouring into the North Sea.

All but one of the 37 crew of the two ships were brought safely ashore. One crew member from the cargo ship, Solong, was missing, the vessel’s owner Ernst Russ said in a statement.

The ship owner said “13 of the 14 Solong crew members have been brought safely (to) shore.” The owner of the fuel tanker said all 23 of its crew members were safe.

The two ships were still ablaze 12 hours after the collision, British coast guards said. They said they had ended the search for the missing crew member. They confirmed 36 others had been brought ashore, one of whom was hospitalized.

Initial report:

Fuel tanker and cargo ship collide and catch fire in North Sea off Britain, crew rescued

LONDON (AP) — A cargo ship hit a tanker carrying jet fuel for the American military off the coast of eastern England Monday, setting both vessels on fire and sending fuel pouring into the North Sea.

The collision triggered a major rescue operation by lifeboats, coast guard aircraft and commercial vessels. All 37 crew members aboard the two vessels were safe and accounted for, with one hospitalized, local lawmaker Graham Stuart said.

Stuart said he was concerned “about the potential ecological impact” of the spill.

The U.S.-flagged chemical and oil products tanker MV Stena Immaculate was at anchor near the port of Grimsby on Monday morning after sailing from Greece, according to ship-tracking site VesselFinder. The cargo vessel, Portugal-flagged container ship Solong, was sailing from Grangemouth in Scotland to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the cargo ship was reportedly carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide and an unknown quantity of alcohol, a Lloyd's List Intelligence casualty report said, according to news agency Reuters.

Sky News understands there is a five-mile air and sea exclusion zone around the location of the incident, which may be widened to 10 miles if later required.

How big a container is (do they mean one of the ones carried on a truck?) I don't know, but not good for the marine life right by it before it disperses.

"insecticides, in making pigments, in metallurgy (e.g., electroplating and case hardening)". The cargo ship was heading to Rotterdam - so to European chemical industry, presumably.

There were no containers on board the Portuguese-flagged cargo ship that were filled with sodium cyanide, the owner of the Solong says.

Ernst Russ, who owns the cargo ship involved in the tanker collision in the North Sea, adds in a statement that it "has been misreported" that the hazardous chemical was on board.

"There are four empty containers that have previously contained the hazardous chemical and these containers will continue to be monitored," the statement says.

Since it definitely wasn't smuggling Russian product, we can all treat this as a learning experience.

The search for a missing crew member after a collision between an oil tanker and a cargo ship in the North Sea has been called off, the coastguard has said.

HM Coastguard said the missing person from the Solong container ship had not been found after “an extensive search”, following the ship’s collision with the MV Stena Immaculate tanker off the coast of East Yorkshire on Monday morning.

It was initially reported that everyone onboard had been brought ashore after the MV Stena Immaculate and the Solong hit each other. But the Solong’s owner, shipping firm Ernst Russ, later said a search was under way for a missing crew member, while its 13 other crew were safe.
...
“One crew member of the Solong remains unaccounted for. After an extensive search for the missing crew member, sadly they have not been found and the search has ended.
