Republicans worry Trump's tariffs could harm economy

Source: The Hill

03/10/25 6:00 AM ET

Republican lawmakers are growing alarmed over signs that President Trump’s expanding trade war is hurting the economy, something they’re hearing from constituents at home who are struggling to adapt to Trump’s zigzagging tariff pronouncements. GOP lawmakers say they’re hearing from business owners, exporters, farmers and local leaders that Trump’s threat of steep tariffs against Canada, Mexico and Europe are chilling business sentiment in the United States.

Companies feel less confident about expanding operations and hiring new workers, given their uncertainty about the costs of imported goods and the potential loss of foreign markets over the next year. “The Canadian tariffs will definitely have a detrimental impact on the economy of Maine and on border communities in particular,” said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). “We have for example a major paper mill in Northern Maine right on the border that gets its pulp from Canada.”

“That mill alone, which is by far the biggest employer in the region, employs 510 people directly. I’ve talked to the owner of that mill, the imposition of a 25-percent tariff could be devastating,” she warned. Trump announced Thursday that he would pause 25-percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico until April 2, but Collins warned that the looming threat of high fees is having a chilling effect on her state’s economy.

“I think it freezes investment until they know exactly what the impact is going to be. So I understand the president’s desire to level the playing field, but Canada’s just not the problem in Maine,” she said, citing wood products, blueberries, lobsters and potatoes that go back-and-forth across the border as key drivers of the economy.

… in trade across the international border there not to mention all the paychecks that are produced
on both sides too. BTW Canada is America’s biggest customer in the world. The value of the stuff
my poutine eating/pike fishing/hockey playing friends from the great north buys from America is
greater than all the purchases that China, the U.K. South Korea, France, Japan, and some other nations
buy from us. Also how much of the dimensional lumber (2x4s, 2x6s, and ….) that American home-
builders, contractors, farmers, citizens, and other businesses comes from Canada?

This is insane and it will wreck both Canada’s and our economy too. Or is that just Trump, Musk,
& Vlad’s goal?

We are doing this by buying nothing that is not a necessity-- food, fuel, medical care only. And when we do buy, to the extent possible, use small and local businesses and ignore large national players. Sure, hard to get gasoline without helping Exxon or BP, but staying out of Target or at least minimizing what you buy there will send their sales down and that will get noticed quickly if done by enough of us. I think airlines and businesses along the border are already getting worried that Canadians will stay home in the travel season. Suspect we will see similar from other countries hitting US airline and other travel related businesses because of Trump policies and general stupidity.

Think. Again.

The real power in America rests with the money.

If the major corporations start feeling some unpredictably to their profits from our economic boycotts, they will be sure to correct trump's ways.

most incompetent clowns that have ever assumed office.

and for anyone thinking that the sociopath will reverse course, I wouldn't bet on it. If the past is any reflection of the future, the sociopath's stubbornness will not reverse course, but double down.

The clown licknick is laughing off any talk of a "recession". Yeah licknick, billionaires don't have to worry about recession. The reality is if these jackasses actually start cutting or getting rid of social security, medicare, and medicaid, it won't be recession that will be the concern, but depression.

We have been blasting the truth since Raygun, where even Poppy Bush called it "voodoo economics" -

They keep going back to it. Even David Stockman, who had created a lot of the mess of "supply side/trickle down" had to back off from it -

Senator Collins: I understand the president’s desire to level the playing field, but Canada’s just not the problem in Maine.

Oh, so that's what Trump's doing...leveling the playing field?
Clever name for engaging in economic warfare against our northern neighbor, and largest foreign trade partner. It's always been a symbiotic relationship between us, and now he wants to wreck all that.
He wants to destabilize Canada and he somehow thinks that will make it easier for us to absorb them into the United States. That's not selling well with Canadians.
Personally, I wouldn't wish that on anyone right now. We're in the process of becoming a shit hole nation, as the Trump taint destroys all it touches.

And what's with the typical wishy-washy position by Senator Collins. Not the problem in Maine implies it is a problem in other states, but she only cares about Maine.
Fact is she only cares enough about anything to keep her seat in the Senate; not enough to actually stand for anything beyond that.
Maine deserves a better Senator than Susan Collins.
