GOP senator says Trump tariffs hurting constituents

Source: The Hill

03/07/25 10:02 AM ET

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) signaled Thursday that President Trump’s threat to levy tariffs on key trading partners of the U.S. is hurting his constituents. “Almost every industry in Kentucky has come to me and said, ‘It will hurt our industry and push up prices of homes, cars,’ and so, I’m going to continue to argue against tariffs,” Paul said late Thursday in an interview with CNN.

His concern echoes that of Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who urged the administration to be “smart” about levying additional taxes and reciprocal tariffs. Tillis argued the U.S. has “more leverage” than any other nation, but not “all the leverage.” “When we start losing, you back off,” he said, according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “There’s such a thing as strategic retreat.”

Their comments come after Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) also criticized the Trump administration’s policies around tariffs, suggesting he is “worried.”

“I think President Trump on economics and otherwise is doing very well, but you remember the old saying: ‘The danger of rising high is that the air gets thin.’ I’m worried about the tariffs,” Kennedy told Fox Business’s Larry Kudlow on Thursday. “We’re in uncharted waters,” he added later. “I think if the tariffs do start to cause inflation, I think the president will back away from them.”

5. Trump Planned Tariffs to Replace Income Taxes

That seemed to be his strategy all along. According to Trump logic you hit imports with tariffs, raise revenue to replace income/business taxes, cause companies to restore (high paying) jobs in the US and hope income rises to help offset all the price increases from your tariffs.

Not there are a myriad of problems with this thought process but without tariff receipts to offset the loss in income tax revenue you're going to have to borrow a lot of money to keep the government funded and make debt payments. If the deficit explodes because this strategy doesn't work or is completely abandoned then you're running the risk Republicans will balk and there will be a default.

The next few months are going to be real interesting. By that I mean, I think there are going to be dramatic economic consequences and decisions that I'm almost 100% sure the Republicans and Trump are incapable of handling let alone taking responsibility for the mess they are creating. Interesting times...unfortunately.

have wanted a VAT tax forever. It is a Value Added Tax which Denmark and a lot of other European countries have. It is a national sales tax added on to the City State and Country sale tax.

It is an EXTREMELY REGRESSIVE Tax.........and really creams the middle and lower people in a country........

In what fantasy universe???? That is ass licking, pure and simple. He is destroying America and America’s economy. He is not doing well at anything other than failing, as is his usual.

Justice matters.
