President Trump has written to Iran’s supreme leader, saying that he wants to engage in talks over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and threatening military action if it presses ahead with building a bomb.

“I’ve written them a letter, saying ‘I hope you’re going to negotiate’ because if we have to go in militarily it’s going to be a terrible thing for them,” Trump told Fox Business in an interview that will air in full on Sunday.

Asked about the letter during a meeting with reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump said that he was “down to final strokes with Iran. That’s going to be an interesting time”.

He promised that “something is going to happen very soon”.
