Trump threatens new tariffs on Canada, including 250% tax on dairy

Source: CNN Business

Updated 1:11 PM EST, Fri March 7, 2025

CNN — A day after offering Canada a one-month reprieve on punishing nearly across-the-board 25% tariffs, President Donald Trump has threatened new tariffs as soon as Friday on Canadian lumber and dairy products.

“Canada has been ripping us off for years on lumber and on dairy products,” Trump said in an Oval Office address Friday, citing Canada’s roughly 250% tariff on US dairy exports to the country. Trump said America would match those tariffs dollar-for-dollar.

“We may do it as early as today, or we’ll wait until Monday or Tuesday,” Trump said. “We’re going to charge the same thing. It’s not fair. It never has been fair, and they’ve treated our farmers badly.”

Stocks, which were lower to start the day after a mixed bag of a jobs report, initially fell after Trump’s tariff threat but pared their losses. The Dow was up about 45 points, or 0.1%. The broader S&P 500 fell 0.1%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was down another 0.1% after falling into correction territory Thursday — a 10% decline from its most recent high. Trump’s announcement gave investors, businesses and consumers another strong dose of whiplash.

Canada should set a tariff, impose it on us, then not rescind it until they get a credible guarantee that this shit is going to stop. No matter what he says.

And they shouldn't call it a tariff. They should call it a trump tax.

And yes, I think tariffs and counter-tariffs might have to stay until tRump solves the fentanyl problem. He sends about 20 times more fentanyl to Canada than goes the other way. And then there are crime guns.

We have to pay that tariff/tax, the Canadians aren't paying it. When are people going to figure this out?
When is somebody going to explain it to Chump?

I think they are throwing out an endless stream of BS every day to distract and confuse people.

Maybe they have some grandiose Project 2025 type stuff to weaken our country and antagonize our allies. But I doubt they will have many "accomplishments" that could be quantified as showing any benefit to our country. People are going to see the negative impacts in their lives when they buy groceries, look at their retirement savings, see companies pull back on hiring, etc. in time for the midterm elections.

The average Canadian Joe is very pissed - you've probably heard.

Fair, reasonable, and planned trade 'agreements' = civil trade. Trump extortion, coercion, implications of thuggery, and military incursion = incivility.

The Big Guns haven't been revealed yet.

Both Canada and the U.S. have Big Guns but, although requiring infrastructure build time, Canada is, a) actively seeking other buyers for it's Alberta heavy oil (or commitments to fulfill larger orders), b) expediting trans-country pipeline builds, c) expediting liquid natural gas (LNG) pipelines to 'shoreline' (check Kitamat, British Columbia LNG port), that demonstrate, d) distrust of 'the U.S.' in its willingness to honor agreements and, e) that our government(s) for decades failed to be forward thinking or anticipate the unthinkable.

So, the 'elephant' is, what magnitude of impromptu Trump retaliation, or outright fuckery move will trigger Canada/Alberta slowly begins closing the oil valves (righty-tighty not lefty-loosey).

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has flipped off the electrical switch to certain U.S. regions. He's pissed. Ontario also produces critical materials but they have no oil.

I have no doubt that, after much measured thought, hesitation, and anticipation of consequences, the Canadian Government will exercise its sovereign right to fuckery back.

Unless an individual lives in the Lotus Land environment of B.C., its safe to presume that most other weather-hardened Canadian folk are stubborn and stoic bastards.
