Trump's 'almost impossible' plan to bring in more eggs is already flailing: report

Source: Raw Story

March 7, 2025 8:47AM ET

President Donald Trump's administration has been trying to import large quantities of eggs from overseas to make up for the loss of eggs that has occurred while American farms struggle to contain bird flu. However, Bloomberg reports that the administration has been flailing in its efforts so far given the logistic challenges in importing a fragile agricultural product with a limited shelf life.

Additionally, many countries are also struggling to hold down the price of eggs for their own citizens, which makes them reluctant to sell any to the United States.

"Turkey, which plans to sell 15,000 tons to the US through July, recently added an export tax to control local prices," reports Bloomberg. "The country is also dealing with bird flu outbreaks, and eggs are important during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan when families often gather for large meals after a day of fasting."

Nan-Dirk Mulder, an analyst at financial firm Rabobank, tells Bloomberg that Trump's bid to replace domestic eggs with imports appears doomed from the start.

I just spent a couple months in England and the first thing that jumps out at ya in the morning is the bright ORANGE yolks.

No different nutritionally and apparently a function of the hen’s diet but it’s sure a “wake up call” when those yolks light up the room.

that's why our egg yolks look different and Americans pay an arm and a leg for organic pasture raised which is often the default in other countries.

The more egg laying hens are packed in together in enclosed spaces, the more likely they will all catch bird flu.

In the US, caged laying hens are usually tiered into three, sometimes more. So that their cages make a tower of 3 with usually one hen per very small cage.

These are wire cages so that feces falls through. Chickens are poor nutrient extractors. Their manure has a lot of nutrients that they don't extract from their feed.

The top bird in the tower of cages gets feed. The second bird gets the top bird's feces. The third hen gets the second bird's feces. By the time the third hen eats the feces, all nutrients are pretty well digested.

This is the corporate farm model for laying hens. The floor of the cages are sloped so that the eggs roll off into a bin or conveyer belt.

Now a days, corporate farms take the chicken poop after the last chicken eats it, and feeds it to milk cows.

This is why the bird flu goes through a flock so quickly and why cows get the bird flu. This is why corporate farmer's eggs have such pale yellow yolks and taste so bland..... corporations use to feed small amounts of arsenic to chickens to get their yolks really yellow.

The arsenic doesn't hurt the bird but it does show up in the egg, though not in large enough quantities to kill grown humans But that has been outlawed, though I hear this administration wants to lift that restriction. Many farmers in undeveloped nations still feed arsenic to laying hens.

Ah, the corporate farm, feeding animals shit and poisons so that their customers don't have to....or do they?

actually belongs -- price gouging by the corporations, and their refusal to lower their profit margins, which are sky high right now. I read where some producers are even holding back supply to keep the price artificially loaded. Still think it's an immoral and unethical act doing so, especially when you're dealing with time-sensitive food.

You're expecting DOGE to get the costs down? They'll fire the lazy hens and shut down the egg farms to find efficiencies. The best and brightest 19 year olds are on it.

We've finally cracked the dilemma which had Yossarian so puzzled -- the eggs sold at a profit for a lesser price because the profit was in the good relations fresh eggs generated for Milo Minderbinder.*

President Cosplay is trying to use our money to buy himself good publicity. Predictably, it will only leave him with egg on his face.
