Exclusive: US CDC plans study into vaccines and autism, sources say
Source: Reuters
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is planning a large study into potential connections between vaccines and autism, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, despite extensive scientific research that has disproven or failed to find evidence of such links.
It is unclear whether U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, who has long promoted anti-vaccine views, is involved in the planned CDC study or how it would be carried out. The CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services were not immediately available for comment.

Autism diagnoses in the United States have increased significantly since 2000, intensifying public concern.
Many researchers attribute the rise in diagnoses to more widespread screening and the inclusion of a broader range of behaviors to describe the condition. But some public figures have popularized the idea that vaccines are to blame, an idea stemming from a since-debunked study from British researcher Andrew Wakefield in the late 1990s that connected a rise in autism diagnoses with widespread use of the MMR shot.

(777 posts)Even if there were a reason to conduct such a study, its execution will be fucked into a cocked hat and worthless to science. These people are scum.

(3,275 posts)But I have worked with autistic kids. It's wasn't my field of study in college (primarily because SPED programs didn't exist when I was in school), but I always loved working with those kids, and had the right "touch", according to colleagues who did have the credentials.
At any rate, raw numbers tell us that there is NO connection between the vaccines and the condition. First of all, as mentioned in other posts here, we are MUCH better at recognizing it. We understand it is a spectrum, going from that kid who is completely withdrawn into themselves and doesn't communicate, all the way to Asperger's, where the person tends to be extremely bright, but has trouble with social situations...think of Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. His character was, of course, an exaggeration...he could be mean...most Asperger's kids are not.
At any rate, the ratio of boys to girls who are on the spectrum is about 4:1. Since boys & girls are vaccinated at about the same rate, if there was a connection between the two things, that ratio would be a lot closer, and I just don't think that under diagnosis of girls would even that ratio out. In my classes, the boy/girl ratio was 8:1.
snip:
What Causes Autism?
Studies indicate the rate of autism is rising, but causes are not well-understood. Scientists have found rare gene changes, or mutations, as well as small common genetic variations in people with autism, implying a genetic component. Some factors that indicate genetic influences on the development and diagnosis with autism include:
A twin or sibling with autism
Older parents
Certain genetic conditions, such as Down, fragile X, and Rett syndromes
A growing area of research focuses on the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. For example, the impact of exposure to a harmful contaminant may be influenced by a pregnant persons or fetus genetic background.. No link has been found between autism and vaccines, including those containing thimerosal, a mercury-based compound.

(1,996 posts)In my view, there is an overdiagnosis of children with autism. I work with special education students, and there is a lot of overlap in characteristics between autism and other things.
The "increase" is almost entirely a result of more kids being diagnosed than in the past.
"Asperger syndrome" is not a "thing" anymore and hasn't been since 2013. It has been incorporated into autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
