President Volodymyr Zelensky met King Charles in London Sunday, following the heated spat between the Ukrainian leader and U.S. President Donald Trump Friday, as pressure grew on U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to withdraw his royal visit invitation to Trump.
His talks with the British monarch came after meeting Starmer, who later convened European leaders for emergency meetings on Ukraine.
Why It Matters
Ukraine, its European allies and many U.S. lawmakers are still reeling from Zelensky's Oval Office visit, where Trump peppered the Ukrainian leader with accusations of "gambling with World War Three" in front of the world's media and broadcasting cameras.
In one of numerous barbed exchanges, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told Zelensky: "Offer some words of appreciation for the United States of America and the president who's trying to save your country." Zelensky then departed the White House early. Zelensky arrived in the U.K. shortly afterward, to a show of warm support and an embrace from Starmer, who admitted during a BBC appearance on Sunday he was "uncomfortable" watching the White House interactions.

(25,232 posts)in some US media. I've heard several reports, especially from the UK, that Europe only needs to shoulder more of the defense spending for Ukraine in order to maintain US aid and backing of Ukraine. They seem to believe that Trump is just being belligerent as a bargaining point to force Europe to take more responsibility.
The only comments I've heard that see the situation with Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy accurately are coming from officials and media in Ukraine. They've got Trump pegged accurately on this. One woman said that Trump is treating the whole issue of Russian/Ukrainian relations as a business deal for himself and the US instead of as peace negotiations. Spot on!
European leaders, especially in the UK, need to wake up to reality. Trump is a Putin ally and always has been, even in his first term. Trump NEVER bargains or negotiates in good faith. He's always out to get the most for himself while screwing the other guy unless he's dealing with Russia or North Korea. If Trump believes that someone doesn't have as much power and leverage as he does in any deal, he will bully the crap out of them and try to crush them.
European leaders need to get this through their heads. Trump does not give a damn about the suffering people of Ukraine, that he falsely claims he wants to give relief to. He cares about two things. 1) Maintaining an alliance with Putin, who has publicly reminded Trump that Trump owes him in return for favors and better deliver on his debt. 2) Using Ukraine's need for assistance as a weapon to extort Ukraine for rare earth metals. Once Zelenskyy signs the agreement that Trump is demanding, Trump would still abandon Ukraine and withdraw all US support. Trump will never support Ukraine because Trump's personal ally in this situation is Russia.
Trump does not want to negotiate for a permanent peace. He wants to stop aiding Ukraine so that Russia can pause, regroup, and continue assaults on Ukraine down the road. He wants Ukraine to surrender to Russia, accept the loss of the land that Russia has stolen by force, and give the US rights to Ukraine's rare earth metals under the pretense of being repaid for past US aid.
Any refusal by European leaders to accept the reality of where Trump stands and what he will do on behalf of Russia and himself is just burying their heads in the sand. Trump is a ruthless sociopath and malignant narcissist. He operates like a crime family boss. European leaders might want to consult with some psychotherapists on how to deal with characters like Trump - preferably therapists with expertise in forensic psychology.

pissing off Trump more.
Or perhaps they don't give a rat's ass about Ukraine. And will be complicit in handing over Ukraine to Putin? Any thing to keep Putin happy.
Of course it will not work, Putin wants all of Europe.
