North Carolina Republican Pleads To End Right-Wing Conspiracy Theories About Helene Disaster Recovery

A Republican senator in the North Carolina legislature has issued a public plea for people to stop spreading conspiracy theories about the disaster recovery efforts in areas ravaged by flooding from Hurricane Helene.

In a Thursday afternoon Facebook post, state Sen. Kevin Corbin, who represents the state’s westernmost area, asked his followers for a favor: “Will you all help STOP this conspiracy theory junk that is floating all over Facebook and the internet about the floods in WNC.”

Corbin listed several examples: “FEMA is stealing money from donations, body bags ordered but government has denied, bodies not being buried, government is controlling the weather from Antarctica, government is trying to get lithium from WNC, stacks of bodies left at hospitals, and on and on and on.”

Since making landfall last week and churning inland, the storm has killed more than 200 people across six states, with more than 70 of those deaths in Asheville and western North Carolina alone. But on social media, right-wing influencers have described an even more gruesome scenario, with a federal government that’s not just indifferent but actively hostile to lifesaving efforts by private citizens.

Can't be the Government 'cause Trump would have stopped all hurricanes during his reign-- ah hem-- administration with one sweeping wave of his mighty (snicker) hand.

Don't see how she can mean Democrats because disgruntled people who aren't receiving magic carpet deliveries of emergency supplies aren't likely to vote for a candidate whose party is the same as the current, "under performing" administration.

Now, "the Jews" are celebrating a major holiday, so I suppose they all gathered in one place and blew on their magical shofars to bring forth a fierce storm upon the land. . . Jeesh, Marjorie, if they're THAT powerful, maybe you should rethink pissing them off the way you enjoy doing.

Oh, and one more thing -- If "the Jews" could control the weather or if they are generally running the world, don't you think that maybe the world would be tidier and a bit more organized? Have you ever read the Bible? There is a lot of emphasis on cleanliness and social cohesion and order.

The fact that the world is such a fucked up place ought to be proof that there is no one who is truly "in charge". We -- including you, MTG-- are all just a bunch of messed up people, (some more messed up than others, of course) trying to figure out how to live our lives in a world beset by circumstances and events, many of which are beyond human control.
