Former GOP Rep. Cheney rips 'petty, vindictive, cruel' Trump at Harris rally

MADISON, Wis. -- Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney introduced Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in Wisconsin on Thursday, citing the “critical moment in our nation’s history” which has led her to vote for a Democrat for the first time in her life.

Cheney, the former co-chair of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, laid out former President Donald Trump's actions on that day before telling the crowd, “I don’t care if you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent. That is depravity, and we must never become numb to it. Any person who would do these things can never be trusted with power again.”

“What January 6 shows us is that there is not an ounce – not an ounce – of compassion in Donald Trump," Cheney said. "He is petty, he is vindictive, and he is cruel, and Donald Trump is not fit to lead this good and great nation."

Cheney is among a handful of prominent Republicans, including her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who have pledged to support Harris' bid, but her endorsement, as one of former President Donald Trump's most outspoken critics within the party, is one that Harris hopes to leverage in crucial states like Wisconsin, whose margins are expected to be razor thin.

3. Thank You Liz

As most of us saw Liz Cheney‘s speech last night in Wisconsin, that was the chant that so many of the students there and others came up with. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinsinger are the two most courageous Republicans so far that have stood up for this fight against this deplorable person, every step of the way.

I have no doubt that both of them will be offered significant roles in the Harris administration, hopefully in her cabinet. In my mind, they are in the same category as Joe Biden. They are heroes for standing up when it counted to help us save our democracy. When ever any of those three are in a room, they should not be able to buy a beer ever.

7. I just finished reading her book "Oath and Honor"

Liz Cheney makes it clear that she's not turning soft and liberal ... she's still a conservative on issues.

BUT she's complimentary and respectful towards the many Dems she worked with on the Jan. 6th committee, including Nancy Pelosi, Bennie Thompson, Jamie Raskin and several others. Until that point (the attempted coup on January 6) she hadn't met many Democrats because most of her work was with GOP members. That all changed when the 2nd impeachment flopped in the Senate, and when Kevin McCarthy withheld his support for the Joint Congressional Investigation.

Now that Cheney has come out and endorsed Kamala Harris (her Dad has too) it's even more amazing. It's not just a solid distrust for Chump ... she is philosophically opposed to everything he's doing and everything he says he will do if elected.

6. I don't think she is a "regime change" neocon like her father

but more the "small government", "few regulations", "spread democracy", insult Democrats type.

It's a shame that the GOP has gotten so loony that people like her and Darth appear "liberal".

Remember that one of authors of Shrub & Darth's "torture memo" (John Yoo) is still around but now advising 45 and the rest of the current crazies in the GOP.

9. Republicans need to get off the small govt and fewer regulations boat

Government is only big for the purpose of helping people and the population is larger. That doesn't mean it is too big. If the methods from the fifties were still being used now govt would be huge.

As for regulations. The same principle. Just let the regulations do the job intended without getting special interests harm the public.

11. They want to transform the federal government into a "business"

I had been through too many ridiculous attempts at them trying to do this before I retired and there is a refusal to understand that a "business" is not just providing "goods and services" but is also expected to "make a profit".

The government is NOT designed to "make a profit", so the whole idea of deploying a "business model" for the operation of the government, makes little sense.

One can use some applicable methods, practices, and tools to help improve efficiency, but at least for the federal government, civil servants take an oath to the U.S. Constitution, NOT the head of the business!

10. Not sure if my opinion is any more informed than you

She is a bit of a puzzle.

She helped pass almost every Trump bill, or appointment, etc. while the Orange Fuher was in office.

She seemed to be a strict abortion opponent. She may even be privately in favour of a nationwide ban.

She was against leaving Afghanistan. She's always supported her father's admin's decision to invade Iraq. A total war hawk.

On the other hand,
She has a fierce commitment to the Constitution and the system of Democracy for the USA. And recognizes the danger that Trump's MAGA cult represents. To the point that she was willing to be ostrizised by her own party.

She was a staunch opponent of gay marriage, even after her sister came out But she has since reversed her opinion, and now is okay with it.

And of course she valiantly led the Congressional investigation into the January 6th riot.

I would say based on those points she definitely has a mind of her own. But it is still a very conservative mind.

One line that stood out in her speech to that gathering of mostly Democrats was, paraphrasing:
"I believe that the family knows best not the government"
That belief could be parsed to be interpreted in a few different extremes. Anti public schooling, anti regulation, pro corporate.
Different that a liberal point of view, who'd say that sometimes the family guardians are the problem...or that you need regulations to curb things like climate change, and that corporations need to be held to anti-trust laws etc.

I also think, if Harris manages to sweep the WH, Congress, and the Senate, she will feel almost obligated to start criticizing her again. Especially if she wants to be a part of a newly rebuilt Republican Party.

12. At this point in time - one of those truly pivotal moments in history - that question simply does not

matter to me one way or another. What she believed prior to Jan.6, what she believes now, how she evolves over the next few years (or not) can be entirely different things. Can I reserve judgement and get back to you in a few years? Please do not mistake this for any sort of approval or liking of Neo-cons!! Did you listen to her speech? I can't imagine the pre-Dump neo-con saying anything resembling that. No matter which way the election goes there is bound to be some massive reconfiguration of Repub party so I will reserve judgement. In today's topsy turvy world the Dem Party can now be considered "conservative " in the true sense of the word, while the Maga Party is RADICAL INSURRECTIONIST.

13. Honestly, I didn't listen to her speech, but I'm finding that in politics words and actions live on separate planets.

I listened to Vance talk about how Trump and him were going to stand up for the working class and reduce middle-class taxes.
And I also remember the whole Neo-con crew lie us into destabilizing the entire Middle East that probably had something to do with the current conflict in Israel.
But you are right, the next few years will be interesting. I have read some who fear a 1 party system, but while I was reading your comments, I'm starting to wonder if it will fragment both parties. Who knows?

14. i had similar thought, that Dem side could be reconstituted as well if it becomes more fully Anti-fascist

and attracts more who are on the side of democracy/rule of law/ antiauthoritianism but are not liberal or progressive. I know we're not supposed to compare Drump to Hitler (AND indeed he prob more closely resembles some of the south american dictators who had their enemies "disappeared" ) but the way that Anti-fascist allies overlooked pretty significant differences and came together to fight common enemy is certainly relevant!
