Trump campaign was hacked, campaign says
Source: Politico
Former President Donald Trumps campaign said Saturday that some of its internal communications had been hacked.
The campaign blamed foreign sources hostile to the United States, citing a Microsoft report on Friday that Iranian hackers sent a spear phishing email in June to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign. Microsoft did not identify the campaign targeted by the email and declined to comment Saturday. POLITICO has not independently verified the identity of the hacker or their motivation, and a Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, declined to say if they had further information substantiating the campaigns suggestion that it was targeted by Iran.
These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process, Cheung said. On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a high ranking official on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trumps selection of a vice presidential nominee.
A research dossier the campaign had apparently done on Trumps running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, which was dated Feb. 23, was included in the documents. The documents are authentic, according to two people familiar with them and granted anonymity to describe internal communications. One of the people described the dossier as a preliminary version of Vances vetting file.
The research dossier was a 271-page document based on publicly available information about Vances past record and statements, with some such as his past criticisms of Trump identified in the document as POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES.
The scope of the information obtained by the hacker is unclear. But it represents a major security breach for Trumps campaign.

Trump's team may've been slacky on security, but there's no reason to think this Russian-Iranian hack isn't hacking Harris's campaign too

(13,810 posts)I don't fully trust Politico ever since they adopted a recognizable right-wing bias after being purchased by that German company.
If a hacker is going to leak a document, why would they leak this one from over five months ago? They couldn't find something bigger or more damaging? Also, why would they leak it to Politico of all organizations given how they could easily sit quietly on the documents if they were truly harmful to the campaign.
I am looking at this story with one raised eyebrow as it seems just as likely as this was an intentional leak to start the ball rolling on dumping Vance from the ticket. Maybe my skepticism is unwarranted. We'll see.

Donald Trumps presidential campaign said on Saturday that it has been the victim of a foreign hack, after the campaign received questions from news organizations about a lengthy vetting document on vice-presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) sent to the outlets.
These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process, Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesman, said in a statement.
Cheung pointed to a report released Friday by Microsoft in which the company said it had discovered evidence that Iranian hackers had tried to break into the email account of a high-ranking official on a U.S. presidential campaign in June.
The company did not publicly identify the campaign or confirm whether it believed the hack had been successful. A person familiar with Microsofts work confirmed that the reports reference was to the Trump campaign.

(18,913 posts)It seems that he really does hire the BEST people. ONLY the BEST.
I spend zero seconds a day pondering "what might be best for Trump," but having said that, maybe what would be best for him would be to lose, and live out the rest of his worthless life at his country club. He gets the IMMEDIATE adoration fix he needs there. He stumbles into the dining room and the trained seals clap on cue. He doesn't have to do any work. He doesn't have to do ANYTHING except show up. I know he wants that for the presidency, and it IS how he conducted himself ("executive time," anyone?)
But I would like to think that the ship has sailed on that nonsense.

(563 posts)Im old enough to remember when the same candidate back in 2016 urged a foreign power to hack into the accounts of their opposition and leak the info. When it happened, that campaign celebrated the foreign powers intervention.
Seems their tune changed when a hostile foreign power hacked THEM instead. 🤔
