ME-SEN: Group of Democrats want a different nomination process to replace Graham Platner
PORTLAND, Maine A group of 200 or so progressive Democrats sent a letter to Maine Democratic Committee members on Friday afternoon, urging them to use a different process to choose a new U.S. Senate candidate as Graham Plater has officially announced he has withdrawn from the race.
The group, calling themselves Maine Coalition for Fair Nominations, wants an immediate meeting that is open to the public to review the current plan. They also want a public comment period to review alternative proposals.
The group is also asking that the state committee members vote on the nominating process publicly. You may remember that the Maine Democratic Committee held a meeting on Wednesday night and voted on a the current proposal.
"We recognize this moment is unprecedented, and we understand time is of the essence. But we believe rushing this process in a way that results in a loss of trust would do far more damage to our collective goal than the time a genuine comment period would require. Furthermore, we believe the proposal here will accomplish our collective objective of a swift, transparent, open, and inclusive nomination process that includes broad participation of Mainers," the letter says.
