Why we dont know what food is spreading the parasite sickening thousands
Theres a lag between when people consume the parasite and when symptoms appear, making it tough for those infected to remember what they ate to pinpoint the problem.

(2,005 posts)Diarrhea treated with antibiotics.
Thats 0.000909% chance of getting it.
Ive got no gallbladder so diarrhea is a life risk I guess. Is this even worth worrying about? Im reading these reports and I feel like weve gone from deadly diseases to a still very rare stomach disorder disease thats easily treatable. Do I need to be concerned here?

(37,592 posts)i talked to my daughter this morning and she was concerned -- she's been reading about it and only wants to get fruit & veggies at a local farmer's place, etc.
and when she starts being concerned about something i tend to take notice b/c between the two of us she seems to be the more logical, practical, rational one.
so i've been looking at a tomato and nectarine on my counter today and wondering if i should just throw them out.

(70,209 posts)It can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration, which can be life threatening. Unlike typical GI illnesses, this one can last for weeks.
I'm allergic to the sulfa drug used to treat it, so I'm keeping an eye on this outbreak.
I am going to be cautious about eating raw vegetables like salads in restaurants and I'll rinse raw fruits and veggies I eat at home.
It's never a good idea to swim in freshwater during the summer. Stay away from small lakes and warm rivers. That's where all kinds of bugs like to grow.
The numbers are likely higher than reported, but we don't know since RFK, Jr. gutted the CDC.
It's not nothing, but certainly not worth getting worried and upset about. Just use some caution.

(2,026 posts)In the winter I pretty much stick to frozen veggies and apples from local orchard. They have a huge cold storage room.
Ill be cooking most of the veggies I buy. I love roasted anything. Plus, a lot less chopping than making a salad.

(23,890 posts)I'm off produce until it resolves. My wife just had made surgery related to her digestive system this year so needless to say we cannot risk getting anything like this. They said on the news it can be two weeks before symptoms present themselves though so I'm left feeling whatever "bad" food got out into the system has probably already been consumed and is out of the system, but I guess we'll have to see.
there is also little doubt that the gutting of CDC personnel who's job it was to stay on top of things like this is hampering the response. Shame on the media for not pointing this out.

(23,890 posts)The country is in the midst of a nationwide outbreak of explosive diarrhea caused by a parasite the CDC stopped surveilling at the federal level in July 2025.
Thats around the same time the Trump administration began haphazardly attacking and defunding federal health and science agencies under the guise of government efficiency, with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. separately also pushing out critical federal scientists and researchers.

Prior to that date, a collaborative CDC program called FoodNet helped federal and state regulators track eight foodborne pathogens.
Among them was cyclospora, a heat-loving spherical parasite thats sickened 1,000 people in an ongoing outbreak in Michigan (the states worst), with similar illnesses cropping up in 28 other states.
